I am going to mount a canopy on the back of our tray top ute, it has no windows, so the interior rear view mirror will be come redundant. Can anyone out there tell be if the mirror is required, if not I'm thinking of removing it and fitting a rear view monitor there.
I have read some goobly gook on the net, but it was unclear. Went to the police station they couldn't tell me either.
Ian a central rear vision mirror is not required provided you have an external rear vision mirror fitted to both sides of your vehicle. This is so in all states in Aust.

Hi Ian,
No you don't. Neither do trucks. What can you see when you have van hooked on. = O unless you want to use a monitor. not a requirement.
I have not used a mirror for 19 years.
Off topic, No gaffer tape found, only 5kg of Stefferflex.
Still waiting on ( Ho what have I done now) Re Fourms.

Iana hi,
we have a crew cab ute and we were experiencing difficulties reading the internal mirror replaced it with a mirror with a built in monitor linked to camera at rear and also on the rear of caravan, I did pay a bit more for a large moniter then a cheapy at local spare part places, I really enjoy have it, easy to read.

Had similar experience inter state and was told to go away and read the traffic act.
Thanks for the replies, I am going to assume it is OK to do away with the mirror. I played around with a Ford Ranger to day, and found I can modify the mirror stalk, and hopefully install a monitor there. The mirror combinations with a rear view camera give too smaller picture in my opinion. Jayco came with a unit that clips over the existing mirror, but the picture is so poor, its not worth having.
I will buy a kit tomorrow, maybe a 5"or 7"screen, depending on weight, and install on a vehicle at w--k, if it works out OK then I might do my vehicle. I have about 5 or more utes to do at w--k, will be an interesting exercise.
I tried to get a camera with a 92'angle, but it seems that they are all going for 120''. this is a pain as I wanted the view to be pretty much 1 to 1 as it was looking at the original mirror.
Sometimes I think that you can have too many ways of seeing what's going on around you when towing I have the van's rear camera monitor on the dash, the towing mirrors, the vehicles normal rear view mirror, add to that either the sat nav or the cars rev. camera image on the main screen and to top it off all your normal dials, instruments, switches etc. Being fairly green I am constantly monitoring for what's happening ahead, the rear view camera to see what is behind me and also my side mirrors so I can watch both the vans wheels and down each side just to make sure that I'm not wandering.
Occasionally not thinking I will glance at the rear view mirror and for that split second I see a rather large vehicle right up my hammer or I glance at the rear camera monitor and think *&^%$# I've lost the van !! No major drama I'll eventually get used to it but at the moment being in this constant state of alert I'm getting to our destination mentally drained - no wonder they invented beer o'clock.
Found that with a small amount of modification, a NESA 5.6 LCD monitor will fit to the mirror stalk of a Ranger. Its size is a bit imposing, but I don't now think it will make any difference to the drivers viewing area. Will install the camera tomorrow and give it a smoke test.
Jobs done, Monitor installed on mirror stalk, camera mounted on the bar at the rear and on top of the canopy, looking to the rear and down, second camera mounted near the tow-bar low. Smoke tested OK, will get the drivers report tomorrow. I think the seven inch screen would give a better picture, but it was nil stock had to get the 5.6 inch instead.
