It's a great idea Ron until late one night the cook wants to look at a different channel and it turns out to be horizontal so it's up on the roof in the dark in your jimmy jams to replace a pin.not all stations come in horizontal. I have a small booklet that came with an antenna I purchased some years back now, showing all the transmission towers in the country, the channels available and how the signal was being transmitted. In some areas signals are still being transmitted in both horizontal and vertical. I put a Winsig attachment on mine but I really think the difference was marginal.
The phased Array unit sold now by Jaycar is probably in my opinion one of the best units you can buy for caravan applications and with the right bracket you could adapt it to the Winguard structure. Have to change the booster too most likely.

It's a bit pricey but if you are really keen on your TV then it will probably good value. It replaces the head on your wind-up antenna.

There a bit pricey so I will see how I go with the modified aerial first Peter , the standard antenna tec was giving pretty good performance in most areas, have you had any experience with these new antennas ..

I do this when I strike vertical oriented signals.  I just turn the aerial so that when it winds down it hangs over the side of the van.  I stand on a milk crate & take out one of the pins & turn the head & fix it so that it will be vertical when I wind it up. I use a short rubber tie to hold the free bracket from banging on the roof as I turn the aerial.

It worked well for me.

I have a downloaded extract from The Aus Gov Communications & Media web site that lists all stations locations frequencies & signal orientation.

Last used the vertical orientation at Noosa river CP several years ago.

Yes and carry a small ladder to get to the antenna on the roof to change to vertical and back (Horz). Used it a few times and it works. However now that digital transmission is used have not used it for a year or two. Not sure why maybe just lucky where I have been.

Thanks for your reply  Rabit time will tell whether it's worthwhile ,as you have said you have not used it for a year or two maybe it will prove to be a waste of time. At least it's set up now as an option to try out I have a feeling it might come in handy..

I have done similar for a few years but having an Expanda then I would just set the aerial up so it was laying over the edge of the van and then standing on a small step I would pull the pin on the aerial head and lay the aerial vertical, held onto the mast by a loose zip tie and then wind it back up, worked brilliantly, the current rig has a Jacks antennae on the mast so am still working on a plan for it that doesn't involve a lot of stuffing around.
