Old VS New Diesels

Gday...

I bumped into this article in "that" magazine.

I thought it was worth sharing.

Thanks John, well worth reading, plenty of traps for the unwary when it comes to modifying modern diesel engines.smile

Can have and may ? The reason these new engine run an air meter is to measure air density entering engine . Not exactly flow . Being computer controlled . They self tune on the fly ., A larger exhaust or more the point .. Free flowing helps . Turbo engines shouldn't have a restricted exhaust in the first place !! Non maintenance in this area brings on more durability issues than simple mods . Oil type air filters are not the best with air meter equiped engines which use hot wire . As oil from filter sticks and insulates metter from working properly . In most cases when engine goes into limp mode . Engine light comes on. Then you get it checked what is causing limp mode .

 Hi Aus-Kiwi,

"air meter is to measure air density entering engine . Not exactly flow "   actually they measure the mass of the air going in so that they can match it with the fuel injected. They measure the temperature and the pressure as part of the 'calculation' for density as well as the 'flow". MAF is mass air flow !
