Covers To Protect "Live" Terminals On Redarc SBI Relays.

I have a couple of Redarc SBI12 relays under the bonnet of our car, each of which have two very exposed 12 volt positive terminals exposed.

Yeh sure!, there are plenty of exposed terminals under the bonnet but these days most are covered.

I've contacted Redarc and they don't have anything as an after sales item-surprisingly.

The later one I bought came with a couple of small plastic covers that just fit on each of the studs but they soon get lost and are barely adequate.

At least the auto circuit breakers have covers available for them.

Has anyone been able to adapt something or actually buy purpose made covers for these relays?

Thanks for any help.

Liquid insulation tape worked for me, its a brush on liquid that forms a rubber like coating.  It's also good for a temp repair if you nick the insulation on a cable. You can get it from most auto parts shops ussually in red or black which is handy for positive or negative identification.

That sounds good.

I presume when done it would look a bit like silastic?

Peals off OK for additional work?

I found if you are carefull with it you can get a nice finish, just paint it on (couple of coats), then after it dries, use a sharp trimming blade to score a trim line around the excess and peel the excess off. So yeah, peels off OK.

Covers To Protect

G'day

CRC make a product that is a spray on insulation

See it here: www.crcindustries.com.au/products/corrosion-protection-and-inhibitors/urethane-seal-coat

I have used it over the years and find it to be a very good product

Thanks KFT , being a CRC product it should be good.

From reading the product sheets I presume it goes on fairly thin?

Hey Sparky, your VSR by red arc should have come with a pair of red covers. Go back to the people from whom you bought it and complain or contact Redarc themselves.

From memory it is thin but several coats are possible to build it up so it is fairly robust. Being a urethane product is pretty tough.

Patrol03, the latest one did come with two black covers but in time they've both disapeared.

Bear in mind I've removed them from my nt and reinstalled them in my Pajero Sport so they haven't travelled well I guess.

I just thought that as the relays are from a good maker, more robust covers would be available.no

Hi You not fussy about colour, get some self amalging tape. Wrap with it then hold for a coupla min,s. Red/Black heat shrink tube and missus hairdryer. There,s a few ways.

Plastic bottle cap, fill with silastic and push over terminal, great so long as your not wanting to remove regularly. Many colours to choose from.
