Mechanics: How do you know they did what they say they did.

Just back from Wagga. Had a great weekend at Oura Beach. Free camp on the Murrumbidgee. 7 days. Toilets that were lovely and clean. Really good spot. Although the river was too high and had really strong currents not suitable for swimming this time. Its in Wikicamps. Not sure about CAW.

Checked out "The Long Track Pantry" at Jugiong vey nice.

Anyhow, how did the van go? it did great. No loss of power, handled the hills well. Engine seemed to be working hard. Maybe used a bit more fuel. Hard to tell. Gale winds all the way home. So was only travelling at about 90kms. Its the first time in a lot of trips I've had to work to keep it on the road. High top van. Daughter followed in her new VW must have driven her mad going so slow. Said there was a bit of smoke for the first kms. but by the time we had got there very little. Might have a look at changing fuel filter. Its about due anyway. Maybe did get bad fuel somewhere. Have it booked into dealer next week just to make sure its OK.

Oh and the wheels didn't fall off.!!!!!

Just took the van into John McGrath Ford at Mitchell. Nothing wrong. They said Diesels will put out a puff of smoke when they accelerate and they are under load. No indications that there is anything wrong in diognostics.

I queried coolant and brake fluid flushing. No they don't need it yet. About every 5 years is all.

They didn't find any of the faults that the other mechanic talked about and I definitely don't need a new engine.

So, in their opinion, everything is A OK. and, the best part was they only charged me $43. and they picked me up from home.

Its certainly a change from previous experiences. I always seem to come out $300 lighter than when I go in. That what it cost me in Emerald for the same query.

So, all happy now. Ready for the big trek in May. So if you see me going up a steep hill and puffing smoke, its all OK and normal.

hi
A puff of smoke when accelerating is fine . It shows the fuel load/ enrichment is working . 80 series land cruiser use to get the same query when new .

I always buy my own filters and write the date and mileage on them before going for service and require the old ones be available for inspection before paying.
That way you know they took the old ones off and you can be sure what filters you have as it is usually easy to check your filters to see that the date etc is on the ones installed.
I also then enter the service in my spread sheet that I use for all my travels which includes my expenditure as well as service records etc.
