Man's body found after suspected crocodile attack at Innisfail

The body of a missing spear fisherman has been found at Innisfail, south of Cairns, in far north Queensland after a suspected crocodile attack, police say.

The dinghy of 35-year-old Warren Hughes was found anchored off Palmer Point on Saturday night.

His spear gun was found floating nearby.

Officers said Mr Hughes was probably taken by a crocodile.

Police and wildlife authorities are searching for a four-metre crocodile, believed to be responsible for the attack.

Meanwhile on Saturday, teenager Lee de Paauw was attacked by a crocodile after jumping into a north Queensland river on a dare from friends.

The 18-year-old managed to punch it with his right arm and escape.

Mr de Paauw was taken to Innisfail Hospital and later transferred to Cairns Hospital for further treatment.

He is in a stable condition.

Oh dear, I am the first to reply to this post, therefore I am not going to say anything about the people being taken or bitten. Nor am I going to say anything about culling. Nor am going say anything about the post! I will leave it up to everyone else to either make martyrs of the people or the crocodiles! I will wait for a reasonable, logical discussion to start before I jump in, so can we start it early, I would love to share my thoughts!

I have lived on a boat in the Johnston river , and can tell you that its full of crocs, sharks and very large gropers. Anybody who swims there is an idiot, and the guy who jumped in on a dare wants his sanity checked. We used to have large 3m sharks right at the back of the boat, and big crocs were a daily sighting.I would say that the guy is lucky to be alive. My early childhood was lived in a house on the banks of the Johnston River. Made some pocket money by catching small salties and selling to a local man who stuffed them and sold to tourists. Back in the early 60s when the crocs were still scared of people, everyone knew not to swim in the river, especially near the Jubliee Bridge. I remember a 22 footer being shot on the bowling green just towards the mouth of the river from the bridge. This was before the cane cutters memorial was put up.

Crocs only do what is natural. Don't go in their water and they will leave you alone. Idiot going for a swim caused his own trouble. Spearfisher was unlucky. When Katter talks about balance in and with nature, he needs to talk about human population control, as well.

Plenty of safe swimming spots in the area. Don't see any point in culling crocs. How many are they talking and how would taking a few do anything to make it safe to swim in the river given the rest of the nasties that live there?

ONE croc in any water. is a dangerous place.
multiples of just reduce your chances by percentages.

Water is THEIR environment.
LAND is ouurs.
respect it and we'll all get along.

Culling humans would make a much more sensible idea.
the numbers of them with the lack of brain and responsibilities
most modern ones seem to have/not have.

Personally, I'd sooner put down a coupla thousand modern humans
than one unobtrusive croc doing what comes naturally.
Feeding and breeding.

They're actually a beautiful, top of their gene line

product of nature. THEY don't bother US.

Humans do nothing but destroy everything they touch.
