Please provide a list of all your electrical equipment, its approximate wattage and how frequently you use it.

And you really do mean "1600W" do you? That is a lot of panels for a mobile setup.

My older 9m Fuso I have approx 700 watt and 3 X 110 amp hour batteries . Use generator or gas to heat water for coffee etc . Gas for shower water . 12/240'v fridge freezer . After use microwave on short duration just to heat milk etc or again I turn geni on . 3kw inverter but they drain battery in no time . Everything TVs etc are now 12v . Even the fans now !! Much less hassle .

 Hi MissGuidedsmile

We can give some better suggestions if you tell us more about what you have to run and how you use it, as Mike has said. Other wise we are just talking hot air hmm

I also think 1600W is a bit more that you will be able to fit easily on your bus roof, so check that is correct ?

But if you have a big bus and can carry a bit of weight OK, then a few AGM batteries will give you a bit of worry free time off the power grid, and a big set of panels will keep them charged OK. You also can fit a relay to the bus charging system to charge the house batteries while driving, and as an extra backup for wet weather charging of the batteries. wink

Cheers Jaahn

Mine has 120 amp 24v system . Plus 100amp 12v fitted to supply house batteries on seperate circuit . Weight and room Is not quite an issue on larger busses / motor homes . In this case I figure it's safer to leave the std system for safety ? 120amp at 24v is massive . Good ole Fuso / Mitsi engineering for bus . The Winnebago ( GM body) is only 110 amp at 12v yet runs elect injection !! 1985 V 2005 the Japs did a better job imo .

Hi
Misguided
What system lithium or Agm or flooded/wet ?
Assuming Agm
You need to have some idea of your consumption
batt sizing to solar
At a guide you will have 1/2ah to 1 ahr per watt
either 800ah or up to 1600 ahr
Remember batteries need filling to 100% almost every day for longevity so u will need performance which will then restrict u to around the 800ahr

Even thou its all theory ultimately u can only use what u can recharge
200 watts harvests produces 11 amps
Average sun at 100% is 5.5 hrs per day 4.5winter 6.5summer
5.5hr x 11 = 60.5ah less electrical loss 20%
60.5 - 20% =48.4 ahr harvest in 24 hr period
48.4x 8= 387.2ah

Mppt controller adds around 13% This was measured on panels at noon .
Panels laying flat potentially donot harvest as much

Hi MissGuided,

It all starts with how much power you're intending to use - as others have said.

Once we have the daily consumption, then we stand a chance of getting a system that works well.

If you're having trouble getting power consumption figures then maybe this will help:  http://12voltblog.com.au/how-much-power-does-12volt-stuff-use/
