12 Volt Air Pumps

I saw a 12 volt air pump advertised on the TV a few nights back. It was Tele marketing and cost about $80.00.

I hate trying to check the van's tyres in cramped servos and wondered if any of you good people have used one or something similar. I think it was called Tiger and was shaped like a cordless drill.

Look forward to any advice thanks.

You really need a good tyre deflator compressor - Choice tested seven www.choice.com.au/transport/cars/accessories/buying-guides/air-compressors

It's a balance of size and weight . Not necessary price . The smaller compressors can take some time to pump enough into a larger tyre under pressure .

Thanks for the replies to date. This one on the TV supposedly pumps up car tyres, caravan tyres, picks winners at the races and knows next week's Lotto numbers according to the spiel they give out.  It states it is not suitable for trucks but will work on everything else or money back. I know some of the cheapies are next to useless but this one seemed like it might be OK.

Next to doing up the safety chains, I think checking caravan tyres is the most frustrating thing about caravan life.

We purchased a 12v tyre pump few years ago, goes up to 150 (whatever they are) - our tyres take 70-75 - but the servo ones only go up to about 60 I think. So a good thing to have, but buy a good one. Ours was on sale at $150.00

Thanks Jules. I agree with what you say. Doug told me about a Ryobi one as well. Off topic but how are you both and where are you?

Have read reviews of both the Air Dragon and Air Hawk on-line.

3 words were used for both brands.   Junk.  Useless. Rubbish.

Only saw one positive review.  I can't afford to risk wasting that amount of money, even if it is less than $100.

Cheers,

Sheba.

On the other hand . Your better with some air in youy tyres than non . Yes I have filled out west with 80lb after a few minutes Tyre pressure went down to 70lb . Should be 90 Lb . Service stations don't have high pressure in there lines .. 30 to 50 lb would get you out of trouble taking your time !! I have inboard compressor for suspension's air bags . ( 5 to 15lb ) Also used to pump tyres if required .

Have a look at 4WD Supercentre site. Currently freight free. The one they sell for $89 appears to be good. I have one that looks identical and it works just fine. They are quite bulky however, so if space is an issue might not suit.

Read a coupla 4WD Mag's.

Unless you into the serious (expensive)ones.
The "THUMPER". One Piston or Dual. are seriously good pumps.
I take mine everywhere in tray. (single pot) Cost around $79 del.

Where 4wders are going up and down with tyres daily they need reliable, efficient ones.
Thumper had rep of both. Speed and reliablility.

And if you ain't got room for safely and maintenance gear when travelling.
You carrying too much crap anyway...
OFF main roads. Compressor ans spare tube are one of the first BASIC spares you should have in your back pocket.

Flat tyre,
You Ain't going anywhere.. Tube and or foam refill and compressor, can get you back to civilisation again.
Split wall. Banana leaves rolled inside tyre. tyre glue on several layers of leaf over split
. and compressor, low pressure regular top up.
got us out once.

Believe it or not, I stuffed grass into a tyre and it got me to a tyre service. True.

Have had a Slime 12 volt inflator for maybe four years and it works fine. Could not be without it, as towing the van to a petrol station to check the tyre air pressure before setting out on a trip would be, for me, a pain. In fact, just used mine and it continues to work a treat.

Bob, an uncle had a flat tyre on his 1927 Essex delivery van one night (travelling with a load of groceries from a railway station in the back blocks of Moorook (River Murray, SA). He pulled the tyre half off, stashed grass in the tyre & drove up on the sand verge all the way home!
Air is just a bit easier to adjust the pressure!

4WD Super Centre brand is rubbish. Mine only pumped up a maximum of 10 tyres, top up at that. They had a local distributor in Albury, he sent all their gear back, too many warranty issues, supplied with second hand parts to fix. They 4WD Centre just told me " bad luck mate' " no known fix". Over 12months old, still shiny new look wow. cheeers Craig

Well, I decided to write to their Owner, Mr Charles Vella, used a pd stamp and lo and behold, a brand new replacement unit arrived today. They sent an email saying " my order" was being shipped, but no other acknowlegement. So now own two compressors as I had to buy a different brand to do my job. Nothing like having a spare. cheers Craig

Hi. Read your report. I need something for my suspension air bags too. What do you recommend please.

Brand name and where to purchase and price would be great.

Thanks for your advice.

Chucker.
