I can't say that the state of origin has the same appeal for me that it once had as it has been sanitised so much with the addition of the extra referee and the video ref. it's just 80 minutes of stop start (getting like gridiron). As one old commentator used to say bring back the biffo and let the boys get on with playing football instead of the main attraction being some guy blowing the pea out of a whistle. The last time I bothered to watch a full game was on the big screen on the lawn of the Darwin Casino in 2013 as usual our blues got pipped at the post by the toads but it was a great night anyhow. This year as I have for the last 2 or 3 I will probably watch the first half of the game get bored and start channel surfing which is sad considering I have been involved in rugby league for over 50 years and State of Origin was always the highlight. I have to agree with you Macka it is getting a bit Ho-Hum but it's got nothing to do with who is winning it's the way that the game is now being played that I find boring.
Footy is soo soft nowadays. You blink, the whistle blows.
Pity it ain't played like 20\30\40 yrs ago.
More "biff" as you say but the players were harder.
And Jeez. It WAS better to watch.
Even Union is a sooky game now.
And Grid iron. don't go there.
Only Decent. serious mens game left in civilised world nowadays.
Is Mens Ice Hockey.
Or. Nip over to Ireland and watch a game of IRISHMEN playing Hurling.
THAT's a serious game bar none. Watch it on You Tube sometime.
Meanwhile we suffer another soft game of "almost" Rugby League. Again.
As a born and bred North Qldr, I've always supported our 'boys'/warriors....however even on our home turf.....with no JT, No Billy the Kid, no Greg Inglis, and inferior size forward pack to the
Blues.....plus a few of our players now qualifying for Grey Nomad status....I really can't see anything but a loss for us, for this first encounter....and maybe a substantial loss at
that......followed perhaps by another....the Qld spirit with JT and Billy the kid back may get us home in the third...but by then it may be too late.......I think the Blue suede
shoes may be too fast/big/keen....
Go the Maroons....Hoo roo.....

Being what is supposed to be a competition of fierce rivalry between NSW and Qld at least it's refreshing to see that this year all the games are being played in either Brisbane or Sydney. Macka a few years ago I saw the Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs play in the Stanley Cup and like our State of Origin they have a traditional rivaly that goes back many years - you are right there was no place for the faint hearted out there on that ice.
I'm about to go down to the rubbity to get a few supplies for tonight.
I'll start to get into the spirit by watching a few past years games .. like Wally's last ... and the one where Girley Gallen threw the cheap shots ... Of course the goodies always win in my videos, most on VHS they are that old.
Tonight I might just have to delete the recording .... Be a tough one to win.
At least I can mute that bloody Gus Gould & listen to the ABC call. What I love most is when Gus starts saying 'they're gone you could throw a blanket over them' referring to Qld. Then Qld springs to life & takes the game. Poor old Gus who knows everything is left with egg on his face once again.
Of course I am banished to the downstairs lounge with all the doors & windows closed so that my swearing doesn't upset SWMBO & the neighbours.
Oh yes I watched a game on the big screen in Darwin, but it was on the lawn in front of the pub on the beach at I think Casurina. All the locals were cheering for Qld so I was in good company.
QUEENSLANDER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ps. I used to get pissed off with the interstate games (pre SOO) when NSW pinched all our good players & won for a decade of more. So the last decade has been such sweet revenge/Justice.
Now Cupie. I don't know about anyone pinching players from Qld. They all wanted to come and play in NSW because that is where the competition was. At least NSW players know which State they come from. Qld has Fijians, Kiwis, I recall there was one from PNG plus one from Kempsey in NSW. The funniest one was that Billy Moore. He walked out onto Lang Park, tears streaming down his face yelling out "Queenslander, Queenslander". Unfortunately the poor fool forgot that he was born in Tenterfield in NSW and played for North Sydney.
Surprisingly, although they have won ten of the last eleven origin series they have only won 58 overall to NSW 48. Given that the grasshopper refereed for ten years I think we would be in front.
Cupie your memory like most Queenslanders is fogged pre SOS NSW probably won nearly every game for 80 years that's why big Arty and his mates invented it. I also had the same experience in Darwin it seems everyone outside of NSW is a Toad supporter god knows why - New South Welshman such as myself are such lovable characters. I'm sick of hearing year after year why Qld are going to lose the series then getting our ars.s kicked, regardless of who they have on the field they seem to grow in stature - this year like always we believe we have your measure. We need to do our bragging before the series just in case everything goes to sh..t again. I say bring back the biffo at least in past eras we got some pleasure in squishing cane toads even if we didn't win. In the early years the Grasshopper was probably your greatest asset you may want to bring him out of retirement to counteract your apparent lack of fit players.
I have great admiration for the players on both sides and the effort that they put in I'm just not a fan of today's sanitised version of the game it's not the game we grew up with. Good luck Cupie may the best team win (NSW) I will be doing the same as you - at least until half time.
Oh well ... another game record assigned to the delete bin.
A bad year for the good guys I think. The C ochroaches have finally grown a backbone. Konk might just be kept on for a bit longer.
DMax .. in fact it was the Sydney pokie money that stole our players & the chook raffle experts like Arthurson & his predecessors made up a bull**** interstate game that was Sydney centric. The game is still suffering from that era.
I suppose that you will soon be claiming Englis. Funny how when given the choice these people prefer to play for Qld. Big Arty played 18 games for NSW & then 3 for Qld when he finally got the choice.
I think that the great referee Barry Gomersall gave back just a little bit of what the NSW Refs dished up to us for generations. There'll be no comeback for him though as he passed away a decade ago.
BTW I think that 58 to 48 is a pretty good record considering the population ratio.
They love us Queenslanders because we are such lovely, unassuming & kind people. On the other hand you produce people like Gould & Gallen. Say no more!
Don't crow too loudly. We'll be back.

.....I wish my pre-match post had not proved to be so accurate/prophetic......
As an aside....if Allan Langer gets any smaller out there on the field I fear someone will tread on him among the blades of grass...I know we all grow smaller in stature as we age however 'The Little General' is less 'imposing' than he once was...imo.....lol...
Cupie...realistically, it may well be a awhile before we are 'back in Town', judging by our lack of player depth last night....don't think even JT and Billy the Kid can breathe life back into that team in the space of three weeks till the next game..

Yep .. I fear that you are correct.
The Blues were by far the better team & I can't see how we are going to strengthen the middle. Not even a fit JT or Billy could help in that area.
Looks like I am going to have to satisfy myself with watching the games of the last decade.... Until the wheel turns.
Perhaps the toll of the season and injuries to a few key (NSW) players might tip the balance, though in the present case I think that the difference is too great.
The question is .. If Tedesco can put in another sterling performance in game 2, is he in line for the Australian Fullback job. I thought that he provided the difference and team inspiration for NSW, along with Fifita who just ripped us up through the middle.
But, all is not lost. When you look at some of the teams in the past and the superiority of NSW at least on paper & in the minds of the pundits, we came through & broke the fragile spirit of the Blues. We can & will do it again. Let's hope that it happens soon.
My prematch predictions were also wrong I finally watched 2 full halves - not because we were winning but because finally we had a game where the referees actually let it flow. If that same match had been a normal NRL game I guarantee there would have been 4 or 5 times as many penalties awarded. Well done both sides they showed some of the old SOO never say die spirit. The blues actually turned up this year didn't just talk about why they should win but actually delivered a result. Don't feel bad Cupie cashed up Sydney clubs have been poaching our country players for the last 100 years and unlike Qld we have a chance to get even because they have decided to scrap the Country/City origin games.
No Cupie, I don't think anyone in NSW wants to claim Inglis. He left the Storm to go to the Brisbane Broncos and then changed his mind at the last minute to play for South Sydney. It would appear that there was something more important than playing for a Queensland based club.
I never have been able to understand all this Queenslander talk. Your best players were not even born in the State. Civonociva was born in Fiji, Myles is a kiwi who still plays in the Kiwi national side, Inglis was born in Kempsey and played junior football in NSW and the list goes on. Reminds me of the Qld Sheffield Shield cricket team. Wesley Hall, Jeff Thomson, Greg Chappell, Allan Border, Ian Botham, Majid Khan, Keppler Wessells just to name a few, All brought to Qld to try and win the Sheffield Shield. They all failed.
We may not win all the time in NSW, but we compete by using our own players, not a lot of imports.
Yes I also watched the game, from HAY NSW. Great performance by NSW. Maroons need to make a couple of changes. Firstly, let's hope JT is back. Milford was taken off in 2nd half. Good to blood him for the future. The only time I have seen JT on the side line is if he is hurt, or we have the match in the bag. even then very very rare. Billy Slater is a must. Boyd did not make one line break, and he missed a couple of crucial tackles on NSW line. that was costly. Bob Katter was spot on re Boyd. We need a barn storming forward, like Petro Cin ( You can spell his name) Myles has to go.
Hey!!! these days the game is about metres. Why in the name of Queensland would our Captain elect a short gold line drop kick, It gave NSW possession at the 20 metre mark and a try with in the ensuring set of 6. And yes I agree, It was great not to hear that bloody ref whistle holding up the game.
Bring on game 2. NSW I see no need for any changes in your side

So this is something that you have adhered to since well before SOO is it? or perhaps a newfound sentiment I suspect.
BTW where was that prodigious goal kicker Hazem Al Masri from? Just to select one from my failing memory.
At 15 years old, after being seen playing at a junior carnival on the NSW North Coast, Inglis signed his first professional contract with the Canberra Raiders but actually played his first senior game at 16 for Hunter Sports High School in New South Wales.[7] Later that year he moved to Brisbane, Queensland and continued to play senior football for Wavell State High School and Melbourne Storm's feeder club Norths Devils. While in Year 11 at Brisbane's Wavell State High School, Inglis played for the Australian Schoolboys team in 2004 and was already attracting media attention as an NRL star of the future.[8] He played his first under 18s game for the Brisbane Wombats in 2004.[9]Before the end of the 2004 season the Storm had added Inglis to their full-time playing roster for the following year.[10]
I also played football for Hunter Sports High called Gateshead High in my days - I never knew Greg Inglis played there. If your right Cupie and I don't doubt that you are then that's another one snatched out of Newcastle's hands no wonder our poor old Knights are consistently coping a hiding we can't keep any of our players here.

You also had Benny. Perhaps he had his mind on other things at the time.
Actually Englis was really eligible for NSW but it was erroneously ruled the he was right for Qld. Had already played for Qld before the error was discovered. So he's ours now & he was happy with that as is plain to see.
His name is Inglis, not Englis, Cupie. Anyway, I like our team. I see all the old Queensland players are now tearing each other and the team apart after their thrashing. Good winners, but poor, very poor, losers.

Sorry about the typo, Inglish no English was never my strong suite.
We'll just have to take a lesson from how the blues handled defeat over the last decade won't we. First thing to do is sack the coach, hey. Maybe Gus will have advice on that score. He knows everything about RL. More than anyone else, hey. Perhaps we can trade for advice on how to act graciously as winners, not like that display by NSW after the last game of 2016.
I still remember how the NSW crowd booed Wally (the Aust Captain) when he ran on to the field. Now we nice people at Lang Park wouldn't do something like that would we.
I like your team too just as I have the Maroons.
PS .. Nothing to say about the NZer Myles then. Or was that just a typo too?
Cupie, can't you remember Nate Myles doing his own Haka all those times he played for N.Z...?...must be true 'Your Honour', DMaxer declared it a fact/fake news....talk is cheap, until you talk
to a Lawyer.....starting to lose your 'Appeal' Dmaxer?...give up while you're behind.......I think Cupie is deserving of an apology from you.....you were on Cupie like a blowie devouring a cow pat as usual....Hoo Roo

Well if I was wrong, I am sorry. It was only a game of football that you lost, no need to get so uptight. I now remember what it was about Miles. He was suspended for 6 weeks when he was in the Roosters. What was it again that he did on the hallway of that hotel? A real class act.
Poor Goldfinger, he has been waiting months to have a go.
