Personally I'd go for a solid canopy on Ute.
Set up inside.
with a Rooftop tent on top.
Roll outs side and back.
Slide on's I've seen. are waterproof?.
But that's about it.
Restrictive in INternal size. Make every ute, "Rolly".
Like a concrete mixer.
Follow one down a winding road sometime.
Plus when not using.
Rooftopper off. and Tinnie on top.
Swags under roll outs.
Best of both.
hi proey,i did consider a slide on some time back, even fitting airbags to the rear springs,it was then i started to ask myself if i could live in a slide on for any more than a few days, short answer "no"not enough storage, limited market for resale etc,so i decided to buy a 15ft poptop, best thing ever, easy to tow, plenty of space compared to a slide on,the other thing to remember is, if you go with a slide on you will have to upgrade your springs, shocks, etc, as they are usually heavy for their size when loaded..hope this is of some help... cheers ray
Depends on vehicle and system . I saw some nice slide on's up in NT where they had a side section that folded out like a camper trailer . It was an extended Cruiser . So whole rest end was modified ..
I have a self built slide on, and use it for trips every year. I have fitted airbags to my DMAX and tow a tinny behind as I am a mad fisherman. How big is you budjet? I built mine for $3000, but pro built ones are up to $60000, admittedly better fitted out than mine. I have also fitted elec legs for easy of loading. I find it suits me, but then I am asingle guy, and don,t need a lot of room or luxuries. Its up to you.

I'm a fisherman like you Bill and a slide on mounted on a 4x4 is perfect to explore beaches, tow a boat. They're also good to easily access trails that even a camper trailer will have difficulty getting into.
There is a whole gamut of them out there, from basic to luxury, light weight to real heavies. I have and love a Goldstream off road van but as I get older and my needs change I will be swopping it for a Travelander single cab slide on. Not perfect but matches my search criteria best.
My hood neighbour purchased a slide on recently. One owner 1974 Franklin. Hydraulic legs needed new fluid but othetwise excellent condition. It weighs 550kg. Maybe newer ones are lighter? He had to install airbags though and is right on weight limit with a FORD BA ute. So beware, some utes might need a suspension upgrade to remain legal. As Macka said, they do roll but they serve a purpose.
