I have recently bought a second hand van, only 2 years old with GTM of 2180kg and doesn't have a breaksafe device, can anyone recommend a reputable place where I can get one fitted in Melbourne, I had a quote today for $950 but thought this was a little extreme.
If your van does not have a break-safe and there wasn't one previously fitted I would give very serious consideration to not fitting one, as there are issues where those of us who have vans that came with a break-safe system are now required to have a battery monitoring device fitted, to ensure that the battery that operates the break-safe is not flat. and is capable of applying the van brakes for the specified time.
If you still want to go ahead have a chat with a dealer who sells your brand of van and they could refer you to someone who could install one for you.
Hope this helps

That $950 quote seems extreme to me too. My JAYCO came fitted with this system www.caravansplus.com.au/catalog/product_info.php. I reckon it could be fitted by a competent DIYer. I would recommend that if you have solar panel(s) and a house battery then power it off the house battery instead of the 7amphour battery and you should never have to worry about the battery going flat.
Thanks Aussie but the law states anything over 2 tonne must have the breaksafe and in NSW must have a battery monitor.
Thanks Bald Ed, yes I bought a unit today for $300 and will have a go at fitting it myself
Hi Bill
If I had been the original buyer I would definitely have put it back on the manufacturer {Golf } to fit it, but as I am the second owner I would have no chance, thought maybe the law was passed since 2015, when the van was built, I'll sort it out
The new van has a brake safe device fitted, over the last 20 years never needed one, never new anyone that needed one,Iam not saying there a bad idea but to me there just another thing to look after..
