Two stroke oil

There a two types of 2-stroke oil. One for chainsaws, mowers, stationary engines (often called "greenkeepers" 2-stroke oil), and another for motorcycles (2T). I gather that you cannot use greenkeepers as 2T but can you use 2T in a chainsaw?

 Hi Rusty smile

We have got so precious these days. When I bought my first two stroke bike I just mixed up some motor oil as the book said. Worked OK biggrin

So i would not be too fussed about which one I used !! And I have worked on thousands of two stoke motors. The biggest problem is caused by NO OIL usually confuse

As my 2 stroke motorbike is actually a 1983 80cc scooter (not some high performance item that revs to 25,000 rpm), I'm figuring that both oils are interchangeable between my scooter & chainsaw. Seen 4 stroke bikes run on 2 stroke chainsaw fuel when the bike has run out. Trying to rationalise all the oils I have in the shed.

Precious yes. I always used sump oil on my chainsaw chain and everything else that needed oiling. Even used it with red-lead to oil the fence.

Theres 2 types of oil, one for aircooled & one for water cooled 2 strokes. As aircooled run hoter than water cooled. When using sump oil for chainsaw chain oil be ware. The diference is the sump oil is easily thrown of the chain & bar resulting in poor lubrication. How do I know, ive tried it & wrecked a chain & bar after acouple of loads of fire wood.

Hi Rustysmile

For another look at the magic of marketing oils consider this hmmTractor Oil Universal the oil you never see advertised except perhaps in the country. In several places I have worked the standard oil we had for every motor was Tractor Oil Universal. Petrol engines, diesel engines, large engines, cars, utes, light trucks, turf equipment, small engines, as well as the manual transmissions, hydraulic systems, some rear axles and whatever else. Not only that but it was a good price. We just bought a 200 ltr drum and it lasted for a lot of changes on almost everything. I have just pointed out the magic of that oil to a friend who has gone farming. biggrin

All manufacturers make it and list it. But you do not find it in the common stores because they are pushing more "specialised" read expensive oils.  Here is a listing for one brand.

"FARMOIL is a STOU (Super Tractor Oil Universal) formulated to meet all the requirements of most modern tractor manufacturers calling for a STOU type oil. It provides protection against brake chatter and squawk. It is a true universal oil suitable for engines, transmissions, gear boxes and hydraulics of most smaller tractors calling for a STOU type oil."

But you keep worrying about a special oil for two types of two stroke if you wishdisbelief

Only thing I'd say.
Is DON'T use Synth 2 str in your fuel tank (diesel) when topping up.(250mm per 100ltr.)

I use green Mineral oil in mine.
Synth oils everywhere else apart from Slippy Diff.

My small engine man told me don't use outboard oil in a chainsaw . It's not formulated for air cooled motors and Ove time will wear out quicker .
