hi, I recently traded my Jayco on a Bolwell Edge, both with electric brakes. The Jayco brakes were working fine with my newly installed Hayman Reece setup.as soon as I changed the brakes only engage on the Bolwell when I have it turned right up and even then they don't lock up as expected but you can hear them engage. I thought the magnets might be worn out so had them replaced but they are no better. Any ideas?
Recently changed my brakes ... Backing plates outwards including magnets as well as the drums. Took the opportunity to replace the controller & plug & socket. Re did all electrical joins & put in the correct resettable circuit breaker too. Not forgetting all wheel bearings & seals.
Brakes didn't work too well despite several tries at adjusting as I always have .. using the 'ching ching' method. (ie. wind up tight & then back off until the brakes just touch making a ching ching noise as the wheel is rotated). Yes I 'ran them in' as suggested.
In absolute frustration I went to a trailer specialist & he re-adjusted them using the 13 click method. (ie. wind up tight then back off 13 clicks).
Fantastic, better than new & only cost $100 cash for his 1/2 hour work.
HI
When brakes are operated by manual override what volts at u getting .
Look at volts into brake controller
volts coming out of brake controller
volts either side of the tow plug
volts at wheel magnets
Brake Lining condition could be hard and cracked [often overheated] Hard linings don't work
If new they may not have been radius ground to drum size if new
10 inch brakes are only average on 4x4 wheel , were they different tyre sizes diameter and width reduces brake lock up potential
Linnings that are backed off a lot tend not to brake as well
13 inch tyre 10 inch brakes lock up easily
15 inch tyre 10 inch work satisfactory
How are the magnet contact faces on the drums --no grooves etc
Do u have the primary shoe [shoe with the shortest linning ] and or [linning position on the lower half of the shoe backer, in this case where the linnings can be same length but different positions ] at the front and front lower
Dunno about the 13 clik. I've always took to lock up. Then back off 3 flats (roughly 3\4 of a turn on Brake cam.)
Whenever van been standing a while. Go for drive round the block. Adjust controller to suit. Then drive for 1\2? km. With manual actuator on with your finger.
Scrapes all dead ust of face of shoes. Then readjust.
I always. When travelling. test the manual lever every morning when starting out. as well as having a good lean on pedal at around 60km. To make sure van slowing you first. WITHOUT locking van wheels.
I also. when in light traffic.
Roll to a stop at lights. Intersection etc. Using the manual lever on controller.\ to stop us.
Just to make sure van brakes working well.
Properly set up. with a decent size\weight van. IT'S brakes WILL stop you from road speeds. IF ever your.... brakes calk for any reason.
It's all just part of your rig maint. An important part. Same as I always change all bolts\pins for High Tensile same dia\thread. plus replace the manual, trailer brake lever cable, to Stainless wire. Maint...
