Welded up some Landrover hub centres with a shallow drum unit on outside face..
Wheel nuts off. put it on over studs with drive cone outwards. Nuts back on.
Both sides. to anchor point ahead\behind you.
Cable , or rope end through a hole and knotted on inside.
Low range. drive out.
Just kids messing about.
We had fun practice in Army too.
Winching Land Rovers and 1 ton Austin trucks UP\down Vertical cliff faces.
Best part was going over centre as you went over the top.
Verrrry Interesting. DON'T STOP. You'll get brown jocks then some.
We used to blow track pins out of ConQ and Centurion tank tracks. then winch them on\off tracks. Replace plates repin them. Drive them over old trucks etc. through buildings.
The BESTTTT though. Were the ARV's and BARV's. (BEACH Armoured Recovery).
Turretless tanks. we fitted winches and A frames on front of.
The Barv's went out into surf line to recover tanks that "theoretically" got their tracks blown, etc. Coming off landing barges.
They had a sq Waterproof turret mounted on top. The whole thing could be underwater. with just turrret intake\exh snorkel and lotsa noise..
You drove it from turret top with extended levers. with divers and powderman.
Crosswinching them up Welsh mountains with three and more trucks\winches was fun too.
Specially when you had to get it on it'd rollers first. on a 130deg and more diagonal
rocky mountainside..
Do all the calc's first. (I always got that bloody job. Seemed to be Good at Angles and loads.).
REME Recovery was a GREAT time of life. Along with becoming a Mechanic to fix 'em.
The best way is to not get bogged & if you HAVE to drive through soft sand, drop your tyre pressures, use those sand track items. Waiting until early morning when the sand is moist helps too. Ask the ****ies who take their caravans to Davenport Ck (out of Ceduna, SA).
