The Murray River Road between Towong & Granya has so many great free camping areas along it, all adjacent to the river. Lighthouse Bend, Neil's Bend, Jingellic, Gadd's Bend, Bullock Flat & The Kurrajongs, we were spoilt for choices. We stayed for one night at Walwa Caravan Park to do the washing, fill our water tank & grab some tasty take-away pizzas from the pub. We then moved on to Jingellic, a fantastic spot with the historic Bridge Hotel overlooking it. We stayed for four nights & went out for dinner twice, the meals are lovely. We camped near the remains of the old bridge over the river. The hotel provides separate flushing toilets & showers for campers, BYO paper & $4 for a hot shower. An unusual experience was walking through the beer garden with a toilet roll in hand.
After a great time at Jingellic we moved further downstream (west) to the picturesque Burrowye Bend Reserve one of the largest in the Upper Murray area. One thing about camping along this stretch of river is that the river runs clear & after boiling its water can be used for dishwashing & personal washing therefore conserving tank water solely for drinking. The birdlife in the area was prolific. With the unofficial Melbourne Cup ''long weekend'' approaching we needed to find somewhere that wasn't too busy. We decided to call in at Rutherglen to pick up some local wines & then spend 5 nights in Warby- Ovens National Park at The Forest Camp surrounded by a beautiful wildflower filled Ironbark forest. Last year we spent the same period at Greens Lake near Elmore, it was dusty, noisy & the sound of speed boats/jet skis nearly drove us nuts.
