Hi we are in the process of planning to join you guys on the road we are going to sell everything and go full time but we need to get lots of things sorted out. We have a Avan Tayla and are considering changing it for a semi off road with a toilet and shower we would welcome any advice on what model we should go for 2nd hand we dont want a new one. Also we have a petrol Prado it has done 300k but runs well never had any problems. Happy to get any thoughts you guys have to share. Can't wait to join you.
Welcome to the gang Peter and Debra, enjoy here and out in the playground.
Caravans as are cars, a very personal choice. The only thing I would say is make sure the van is the weight you need and suited to the Prado. NO NOT have the van or Prado over weight at all. Also make sure the van number place is no more than 1.3mts to the top edge of the plate.

G'day Macdee and welcome to the forum. Don't forget to try the two ongoing games here - 'Who is This' in the 'I Digress' section and 'Pick this Place' in the 'General' Section - a great source to find new places to visit.
Believe it or not there have been instances of the manufacturers not completing builds to Australian Standards - hence Dougwe's plate comment.
Afraid not - seems a few caravan makers have the rear rego plate too high. The top of the plate cannot be higher than 1.3m from the ground ... and the driver of the rig is responsible if some pedantic police or transport officer actually gets his tape measure out, even though it was registered that way.
And a welcome to the playground from me as well.
Travel safe
Joe

Thanks for your reply I don't understand the comment about the plate I assumed it would be in the correct place already
Peter
The law, that is not known by many and seems even the builders of vans don't know OR don't care about the 1.3mt height of number plates on vans.
I heard about it here on the forum so went to speak to the men and women in blue and after chatting to two traffic police there is a law about such a height. They both did say though that "we have much more important things to do than worry about that" they continued with "if you you give us the sh.ts we will look for anything to book you for, including the height of your number plate" I rang the dealer of my then only 3 month old aluminium tent and he didn't even know about the law. We agreed that I would fix it at his expense. The number plate is now well below 1.3mts.
If I remember correctly, it also has to be seen at a 45* angle top and both sides from a distance of 20mts.
A silly little law but a law. I was also told by the same two police it was to do with roadside speed cameras.

Peter & Debra I also have a prado towing 18 6 a Regent Caravan , All works well you all ready have a Avan Tayla so no need to be in to big of rush to buy another caravan , Work out what works and don't work in your present van , Then make up a list of what you need and start looking at second hand caravan that tick your list, Always find the need for a feature before you buy something , Think about do you really need off road we have never found the need for off road but if you think you need one go for it , Hope you have fun searching for your new home we did and it took us 6 month and we were and still happy with our choice .
And its welcome from us two 2 MacDee all good advice up above van and tug weights and combined weights are THE most important numbers to know BEFORE you part with your hard earned cash and dont take their word for it have it weighed your self if you have to .
Good luck and enjoy search
