My wife retires in 12 days and we have been planning our trips for sometime now. This year will see us take in Darwin and either the east or west coast.  We aren't sure which way we will turn yet.

Still have lots of questions of course despite carting an off road trailer around for a number of years up several of the tracks. Now with a 20ft van we are also wondering about getting a car topper to take with us, (yes, I know it won't be much good in Coober Pedy), but we are going through all the comparisons or boat types and loaders. So far the Quintrex 350 Explorer is winning the boat race.

We are also considering upgrading the van to a full off road (if there is such a thing).  The one we are looking at is 500kg heavier than our existing van but I can't find anything anywhere on increases in fuel consumption by weight towed.  Any ideas?

Anyway, nice to be here at last and hopefully I can add to the conversations.

Hi Ric, welcome to the forum.

Legal weight limits will govern what you can tow and carry.
"Off Road" vans are generally heavier than tourers.
Boats and outboards can add considerable weight to your tow vehicle.
You will need to do all the sums.
I have not seen any calcs re fuel use for a given weight.
You may talk to owners of the same model vehicle to establish a ball park figure.
Genearally aussie 4 x 4 utes become close to weight limits well before a boat and motor is thrown up on top.

Research will get you on the right path.

You did not give us any ideas regarding your tow vehicle.
Whatever van you choose ensure you obtain an accurate Weighbridge Tare also ensure your choice can comply with Caravan Council Compliance checklist www.caravancouncil.com.au/compliance


I would prefer a dual axle model for better road control on heavy van, with leaf springs.
Regarding Tow vehicle - be aware of GCM of your vehicles including occupants and all your gear. All Jurisdictions are now doing roadside weight compliance testing

Go into it with eyes open and ensure your Dealer is reputable. Follow the guidelines and you will get a good unit.

As the others have already stated just be careful, and realistic of your weights - total, towed and on top :)
