Hi all, just wanted to introduce ourselves My hubby and i have not long joined the Retirement club ( sounds exclusive đ However now we are hoping to do some serious free camping on our travels. We have a small coromal with all the important things on board so as not to do midnight loo runs. We are wanting to go from adelaide to cairns end of may ( hope this is a good weather time. We will be away for 3 months ( to avoid winter here) does anyone have advice on places to stay along the way. Our catch is we travel with our small 4 legged friend . So need pet friendly places. Water top ups for the van will be needed evey 4th day so will need park stays too.

Welcome to the forum Teresa.
May is a good time to travel but there will be many caravans on the mass exodus from the southern states.
Where you stay will depend on the route you chose to travel.
I suggest you download Wiki Camps.
It will cost you about $8.00 and it is a valuable tool to plan each days travel with details of places to camp.
The App will allow you to set the parameters of your camp requirements and you can plan on a map your entire trip or just do it day by day.
The App has info as to where you will be welcome with your dog on your journey.
It will give you dump points for your toilet and you may get water at many of these sites as well .

I hope this helps and that you enjoy your trip.

Welcome to the gang Gutsypuppy, enjoy here and out in the playground.

The "Club" is only exclusive for people that have earned their membership by working many hours for many moons so don't feel guilty if you do. I don't. I try very hard not to do much of that W..k thing these days or even say it, just odd jobs, but then I'm odd so I fit in well there. On the other hand 'Woody' from 'Woody and Sue' here on the forum makes out he w...s hard all the time. Oh! and loves pink, no not Pink, pink. Well he might like the entertainer Pink too, I do.

Keep Safe on the roads and out there.

Thanks for the replies . I will have a look at the wiki app. And yes i was afraid there may be a caravan queue on the road leading to warmer climate in may. We are going to Up through central nsw to get to cairns, rather than the coast . And hoping the roads are all suitable for the van. We were hoping to just take our time To see things properly and not preplan our stays. Do you think we will get caught out with no where to stay by doing the trip in may ? Sorry for all the qustions,

If travelling on the more outback roads the heavy caravan traffic wont be quite as bad as the coast.

If using caravan parks, all you can do is book ahead.
If you are taking advantage of free camps, the ones on the main highways fill up fairly early each day so planning is essential.
Showgrounds generally have more room but powered sites may be a bit "lite on". No pun intended. :)

You will be astounded as to how many nomads are heading north at that time of the year.
Last year we went up in late February which was very hot weather and did not return until October/ November which was much better than "fighting" for a spot each night.
Being self sufficient makes it a lot easier.
If you plan ahead and have a look on WikiCamps for spots that are just a little bit away from the beaten track then that may help.

Enjoy your journey and safe travels

And its welcome from us two 2 gutsypuppy
There should be lots of fun on your trip if its crowded at free camp sites why not just go out a side road to the next x road and camp there must be spots off the main roads or head off to a small town a few k off the main road .

Of course I like pink, pink bits are the best bits , oh and pinks not bad either, Doug

So I hope this finds you in the pink, like me

G'day Gutsypuppy and welcome to the forum.  Don't forget to try the two ongoing games here - 'Who is This' in the 'I Digress' section and 'Pick this Place' in the 'General' Section - a great source to find new places to visit.

Gutsypuppy there are many ways to travel from Adelaide to Cairns they are all good roads you need to look at wether your like inland or like to follow the coast line , You could do both go up inland and follow the coast line back down , We love the inland with lots to see and laid back lifestyle , Which ever way you travel you will find lots of camp sites and caravan parks , We tend to stay clear of the big name caravan parks and also like to stay a showgrounds .

I find traveling to camping grounds or address can be tiring . We just stopped, checked wikicamps or free camped in set areas when we wanted either due to nice place or just tired .In our case we have have our own toilet but only for emergencies .. Enjoy ..

We usually sort of get a place in our heads to go to, but it is always changeable - and it has been changed many, many times. One of the things we find in some of the really popular camps, is to be in the camp sometime between 3 and 4pm - also gives you a chance to look around the area near the camp - Theodore in QLD, is a great camp, but gets very busy, there is a bit of a slope there as well, so the earlier in, the better.

Have a look at the Budget/Free Camps on this forum - we have found a myriad of camps from there. Good luck (we did the big lap in a camper trailer, many years ago now). Enjoy, don't stress - stay an extra day in some of the spots - talk to fellow travellers - you will have a ball.
