Is anybody towing with Hyundai Tucson Diesel? Have they had additional tranmission cooler fitted and is it necessary? Planning to tow an Avan Cruiseliner. I've searched for specific information and can't seem to see it anywhere.
Hi Jeffrey, As an old retired Motor Mech I can assure you that extra Auto Trans cooling on any towing vehicle is an advantage in the reduction of temperature in the AT unit thus lengthening the life of fluid, friction clutches and torque converters.With reduced temperature your vehicle radiator will also benefit on long hot pulls. In an ideal situation with the correct size cooler the best way to go is to bypass the radiator.When fitting a cooler in conjunction with the radiator you need to fit the cooler after the radiator into the return pipe to the transmission.
Yes in Aust we hardly need trans heaters . A GOOD trans air only cooler does great . Takes away any trouble you may have with coolant leaking into trans fluid leading to expensive damaged auto !
Quite a few of the newer vehicles have thermostat controlled trans oil coolers fitted which keeps the oil at a constant temperature to aid fuel consumption.
Back in the 70's Jaguar XJ6's came standard with a fuel cooler connected to the airconditioner line to stop fuel boiling in the float bowl, also had a fan fitted to the battery box for the battery.

Some Ford vehicles have had a history of what you describe.My own vehicle a Y62 Patrol has an independent cooler and preheater for the auto trans to bring it up to running temperature quickly. Auto trans development has accelerated over the last couple of years and we are now reaping the benefits of it I still like to run COOL when towing.

Yep having said that be aware of towing with tugs I drive ! The overdrive in auto is way too high geared to have enough engine torque . This causes a turbo diesel to boost up to try to keep up to speed . In this case the turbo starts to heat up . On our travels up Western Aust we run into a few Nissanâs and Toyotaâs with auto issues . They all where towing in D drive . Pull it down a few gears on hills or head wind . Yea goes against buying an auto !! Keep in mind itâs a rather small turbo diesel working pretty hard over long journeys..
I have a Penguin I tow with a Ford Escape diesel, prior to that I towed the Penguin with an ASX diesel. Prior to that the ASX towed an Aliner, prior to that I tpwed a Swift with a Cruise diesel, all auto and I used the Torque ap. the tranny and engine temps never changed when towing any of them.

torque app is installed on smart phone ect And shows the temps via blue tooth

Vehicle internal radiator coolers are needed all the time except where the vehicle is towing max load for an extended period .
WHY
The tranny has a huge amount of fluid inside . It needs to warm up quickly [at least as fast as the engine ]
The engine will be operating above 92 deg cel
Fitt an additional cooler at least 11x11 inch [275mmx 275mm ] at least 19mmm thick or even the 38mm thick unit . If your real keen a 50mm unit is avaialable also . ITS all ABOUT SIZE . As discussed to big can also a bad thing for warm up .
