Any other women take a tent while wondering around solo?
My last big trip was in 2010 and I started off with a car and a lightweight (1.9kg) bushwalking tent for a drive across the Hay Plain, over to Port Augusta, and up through the centre to Darwin. By the time I hit Katherine I decided I needed something luxurious so bought a bigger tent, which saw me travel in comfort for months around the Top End and then back down the same way, as it had become a once-in-a-lifetime verdant green centre, and home through the massive 2010 floods. Had a wonderful time, met some memorable people and saw some amazing places!
Now I have retired, this winter I want to cross the Nullabor and head up the west coast, detouring through Esperance and the SW and anywhere else that takes my interest, again with a tent.
How many other women on here take a tent and travel solo in remote areas? I only felt slightly unsafe with people I came across a couple of times back in 2010 and so chose to either keep driving or packed up camp and moved on. I did a fair bit of free camping in remote areas, and plan to do the same again. I will be taking an Epirb of some sort...still to be purchased.
Is it still pretty friendly out there from a human perspective? The natural dangers won't really have changed, and I am aware of them.
G'day Kimba and welcome to the forum. Don't forget to try the two ongoing games here - 'Who is This' in the 'I Digress' section and 'Pick this Place' in the 'General' Section - a great source to find new places to visit. Done plenty of camping in my earlier years (up to a few years ago with rogaining) but Marion and I prefer the creature comforts more these days. Might get more answers in the solo travellers section. Happy travels :)
