International women's day

Every time I see a woman driving a bus, I think of how far we have come.

Then I wait for the next bus.

It seems to me every day is declared to be international something or other day, just out of curiosity is there anyone on this forum who is planning on doing things differently today in regards to women ? Maybe I'm just being cynical or am I missing the point - I'm beginning to think I might be the only one who just goes about doing my normal business on whatever international day it is. confuse To be truthful the international events that most interest me usually occur in the sporting arena - that should draw some flak from those caring and sharing people out there.

cheers

So: Dr Samuel Johnson would not have been popular today when in 1763 he said:

"Sir, a womans preaching is like a dogs walking on his hinder legs.
It is not done well; but you are surprised to find it done at all."

I am reliably informed that the idea and intent of having an International Women's Day is to ensure conversation happens.   One specific topic in that conversation is to make sure the next generation leave behind old school ideas of what careers and pay scales women should pursue.  No need for a men's day when the conversation is mostly about equal treatment leading to equal outcomes.

From my first job at 16 (1968), I've always been employed by companies who paid equal pay for equal work. So I'm always confused as to why days like today are pushing equal pay as I thought it's always been there.

Back in the dark ages, one was paid by job description. In the banking sector, there were male jobs and female jobs. The girls operated the ledger machines but got an allowance for each keystroke, They also got supplied uniforms making their wages equivalent to an equivalent age/experienced male doing other clerical duties. Equal pay for equal work meant that tellers (male or female) all got the same wage. The postage clerk always got the same pay rate regardless being male or female. Males didn't get a keystroke allowance when doing ledger operating which was the norm in small branches. Removing the male / female job descriptions, female uniforms, keystroke allowances and just paying everyone as a clerk simplified things but at the time not all females were happy about it but it was generally seen as a good step forward.

A good plan Iza and no doubt put in place with the best of intentions but I can't see how it will ensure that the conversation happens ? As I said - I for one probably won't discus the topic with anyone and I'm not sure how many others will just because someone said it's international women's day. I would add though that the goals you mention may be the intent of the discussions in advanced western economies but I'm pretty sure that in places such as here in the middle east women would want to be discussing more basic rights than just equal job opportunities and rates of pay.

Reminds me of the story of two passengers on a plane, when the captain came over the intercom welcoming the passengers. One man got het up about having a woman pilot. The other tried to calm him down by saying "Its OK having a woman pilot - its not as if she has to reverse the bloody thing". I'll put my tin hat on and run for cover now.....

A real one?  Shucks no!  As if the virtue signalling PC mob, who in the main just so happen to be making hay out of the taxpayer so way or another, will ever countenance that.  Men, with their 'toxic masculinity' predictably come from horrid, disgusting origins, snails and puppy dogs' tails and only get worse as they age.  Wonderful women, Earthly Goddesses, had no role in their making or raising - which is probably true for many celebrity feminists.  So, IMD deserves barely a mention and then only to chastise and berate those nasty, violent men and boys to do better (an impossible feat!).

However, men will quietly feel that an 'international men's day' has arrived when Women's Day can be celebrated without the scornful harpies feeling obliged to bag out and scourge men and boys.

Gday...

If one is to assume that the response on this thread is representative of the general public then I feel somewhat lessened as an occupant of this planet.

Do men really have such a low opinion of women, their women - mothers, grandmothers, sisters, daughters - even wives ???????????

Do men really believe that any woman that seeks to be accepted, nah recognised, for herself and her abilities rather than her appearance, is a dreaded adversary?

I would feel pity if it wasn't so sad.

Cheers - John

Who was it who said - I don't know why women want equality with men - they are already the superior being.

Often laugh myself about equality. Why would a woman wish to drag herself down to a man's level. Especially pugilistic sports.

In the 1990s, only 11% of production line employees on the line at a major factory in Melbourne were women. There was a target to get to 15%. This was never achieved as not enough women wanted to work on a production line.

Some options,

Egalitarianism - the doctrine that all people are equal and deserve equal rights and opportunities.

Synergism school of equality
www.quora.com/Is-there-an-alternate-gender-egalitarian-movement-other-than-feminism-which-focuses-on-issues-of-both-the-sexes

Humanism - 'if you are a humanist then you are a feminist, but not vice versa'. Discuss..

Note: All of the above rule out equality of outcome, which is an entirely different kettle of fish. Equal access and equal opportunity do not imply or require equality of outcome.

Just looked this up. Apparently female equality with men doesn't include men having their own day as per women. Apparently it's sexist and we don't need one. But who cares. I don't

Toilets Save Lives. Toilets save lives because human waste spreads killer diseases. However, 4.5 billion people live without a household toilet that safely disposes of their waste. World Toilet Day is about inspiring action to tackle the global sanitation crisis".

I questioned how effective having an international womens day actually was and would it really make anyone (other than those with a self interest) do anything different. The same question goes for any of these so called international days regardless of the topic. John if not getting involved in that event yesterday made me a disrespecter of my wife, mother, grandmother, sisters etc. etc. then I,m probably guilty as charged. If that is the case based on Leo,s post on the 19th November I am also going to become a disrespector of toilets.......cry

~snickering about the bus~

I remember Deb in the days prior to a GPS with the street directory open & telling me to "turn left here"; at the point we were level with said street going at 80kmh, I just turn with a WTF look.

Now when travelling she says "why dont we go this way?" My response is usually about her amazing former map directional skills.

Personally I think we should have National Grey Nomads Day. When I retire that will be every bloody day!

FYI, there is no international mens day, there is a bee day, and a tuna day, and even an international toilet day. There is an international day for female genital mutilation, but not one for men. Guess we don't exist.

The point is that the Toilet Day is OBSERVED by the UN whereas Men's Day is not. UN Priorities.  So much for claimed worldwide plot of 'patriarchy' and men's 'privilege'.  biggrinbiggrinbiggrin

See here,

"16 November (third Thursday in November)
World Philosophy Day (UNESCO 33 C/Resolution 37)

19 November
World Toilet Day (A/RES/67/291)

19 November (third Sunday in November)
World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims (A/RES/60/5)

20 November
Africa Industrialization Day (A/RES/44/237)"

The concept of international (whatever days) days is meaningless and of little interest to the average person.

Gather a few loonies banging pots and pans and call it an international day.biggrin

While I'm at it, contemplate this:

Can women join a Men's Shed?

From The Mens Shed site https://mensshed.org/amsa-resources/handbooks-factsheets/faqs/

"Q. Can women join a Shed?

A. Yes, women are welcomed at most Sheds"

Can men become members of the CWA?

From the NSW CWA site. https://cwaofnsw.org.au/page.php?id=4

"Membership is open to all women living in NSW and ACT"so the answer is no.

Seems to be a one way street.

As professor JSM would ask "Why is it so"confuse
