Hi All, I have a problem with my 3.8L petrol Pajero, Doing a trip at the moment and the fuel useage is astronomical, 30litres per 100klms. I have taken out the O2 Sensor and cleaned it with Contact Cleaner, a little better but still high. Mitsubishi have discontinued the sensor and I have sourced one (Hope its the right one) and had it sent to my next port of call, Broome. I replaced the air cleaner (old one only 5000K's) and have reset the computer. What else can I do, and is there any Mitsubishi Guru's on here. Thanks in Advance. limited internet access also at the moment. Bob.

1)Fuel injectors - could need a clean - stick some good quality fuel injector cleaner in it & see if that helps. Or a proper fuel injector clean.
2) Failing that your timing could be out, have you lost a bit of power or a bit of black smoke coming out of the exhaust. I had a similar problem with a vehicle that had a carbie - timing was too far advanced.
3) failing the above - maybe time a visit to a good mechanic.
Try some of the Pajero forums or the mitsubishi 380 forums.
My guess is that it may partly due to where you have been towing (hilly etc) as I know the 380 engine can chew fuel when worked hard. Do not rely on the computer l/100km figures as they are only a guide and the only real test is recording litres used and kms. Is the vehicle down on power as well?...if so the catalytic converter can block. That engine has a very good name by the way.
Is there any leaks in exhaust ? Is engine up to temp ? Does this engine use an air meter ? Check vacuum hose to fuel reg ? If there is fuel in hose ? The diaphragm in fuel reg is leaking and why fuel consumption is high . Other things ? Inlet abs coolant temp sensors . TPS may not be correct calibration . Can disconnect one injector electrical clip at a time listening and noting rpm drop. They should all be about the same. Figure air cleaner is clean, not restrictive . Check the fuel tank evac system ? Charcoal canister. It maybe pulling fuel through too ?!
Why I ask about exhaust leaks ? Because the exhaust close to engine actually pulses . Any leaks sucks in air / oxygen. The 02 seniors read the extra oxygen and ECU adds fuel to compensate . !!
Well time will tell ,and after being sent a different sensor to what I wanted I modified it with a stanley knife and made it fit. I then went to an Auto electrical shop in Broome and the bossman Aaron put his diagnostic pod on it and gave it a clean bill of health, (it was a bitch to fit.) If you need any Electrical mechanical work in Broome, Aaron is an honest tradesman and will do his best for you. Elite Electrical is the company I can recommend him, and very reasonable with his rates.
Thanks all for your contributions, and others
I will see how the consumption is I get on the road again.
Hi Abner, that Fuel consumption sounds about right, I have an 07 NS paj, 3.8 and on lpg, on my last trip up to darwin last year, pulling our 22 ft van, driving up from Adelaide to port Augusta, slamed into a headwind that lasted 3 days and the paj sucked the fuel, worst was about 44 l/100, the petrol ones are thirsty, around town without the van it sits on about 15 l/100, the lpg tank took some of the sting out of the wallet, but lpg availability is kinda scarce the more remote you travel.
