Looking at installing a scupper hatch , from what I can see they appear to be a universal fit on whatever thickness roof a van has , is that correct and also what is the best position for the hatch, can it be placed anywhere ? Any info negative or positive would be appreciated .
had 2 van both with scupper, first van had a front kitchen so it was over this area
used it once and crap came in over the floor did not keep the dust out at all .
2nd van the bed was at the front and scupper is above this , learnt from the first van and did not use it,
but we where is a heavy rain storm ( we where park up for the night ) and the van was angle to the front , the water built up and over flowed the scupper
soaking the bedding ( scupper was close but they dont have a seal ) , the wind was towards the front so a bit of a dam was happening
I would not ever put one in , total waste , they dont really work at keeping the dust out ,there is no screen so all the crap, bugs, etc get into the van when travelling
save your money

I think you will find that the scupper vents work by providing a possitive air pressure in the van so that dust can not get in. The problem is that most caravans are not towed fast enough nor should they to allow the air flow in to provide this suitable pressure. Work good if you have it on a rally car!

We have one on our coramal van. To stop leaves and insects getting scooped into van have fitted a removable filter on the inside which works very well. We use it whenever travelling on dirt roads and find it excellent at keeping dust out.

Have you ever tried on on a van? I would agree with you if we were talking about the forward facing scoops on snorkels. However it does not take much pressure to keep dust out of a van.

Yes on a Jayco offroad camper vent almost same height as the Prado tug roof towing on gravel roads in the Kimberly at 60 to 80 kms. Stones and dust on top of the bed below the vent. Perhaps not pressurising due other vents around fridge, door not fully sealed etc? Have seen reports on other forum the same result and advise the best to pressurise with a large boat sump air pump running through a snorkle and car filter arrangement. I have a better built van now with a StoneStomper that works well no dust in van. The stonestomper with mud flaps on the van at slight angle away to the side deflects most dust and stones away from the tug and van. Very please with the result.
