I also was a bit surprised when I read that article as well, however it was a truthful statement just not complete - the boost would be followed by a rapid decline.

Wondering how it'd be any sort of boost! Likely to be FIFO workers, not locals. And the decline would be permanent!

In case it's not clear, I'm very much against the idea!

Might as well let overseas companies rape more of our natural assets. The reefs buggered & the mainland's full of holes.

If mining stopped this country would go broke because we don't manufacture anything.

DD, our economy's reliance on the mining sector and its so-called benefits to employment are just furphies perpetuated by self-interested parties. Here are some comparative stats on GDP sources to consider. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economy_of_Australia

I'm always sceptical of references to Wikipedia as an authority.
Mainly because anyone can edit any entry in Wikipedia. So what is quoted may be just someone's random thoughts, unsupported by facts.
Note: I'm not suggesting that dabbler has done that, just that there must be a more authoritative source.

Wikipedia is the same as Wikicamps, any idiot can put whatever they like on it.
