AAHH the old "over or under" debate - I put it on so that it rolls from the back down, not over, travelling you end up with loo paper all over the floor - especially on bumpy roads. So I am an "under" person.

The main reasons given by people to explain why they hang their toilet paper a given way are ease of grabbing and habit. Some particular advantages cited for each orientation include:

Over reduces the risk of accidentally brushing the wall or cabinet with one's knuckles, potentially transferring grime and germs.
Over makes it easier to visually locate and to grasp the loose end.^]

When it was a juvenile, the kids' Burmese cat used to bite a hole about a centimetre deep and a watch face wide, square through the middle of the roll. Several toilets, several rolls and the same neat hole appearing in each. Only to a new roll on the spindle confuse We had to shut doors until he was older, when he acted like an adoring pup that followed his selected humans everywhere.

I'm an "under" person myself, but the 1891 patent diagrams for the toilet paper roll has it going over the top.
