How many amps.

We are buying a new van that has the fridge and battery both fed through the Anderson plug. With our current set up the Fridge is through the seven pin and the battery is through the Anderson plug, both circuits are fused and running through individual 70 amp relays. Can any one tell me what size fuse and relay I will need to run both on the one circuit. The fridge is a 184 ltr Thetford.

Depends on the cable size. Fuses are there to protect the cable.

Hi
Are u wanting to convert your tug to a slngle cable Anderson,to match the new van ???

How many agm batts in the van ??

80amp circuit breakers/fuses at each end of cable

25mmsq cable 35 amps .4 volt drop over 9mtrs

Then of course, that size cable won't fit into a 50 amp Anderson plug cable lug. Best option I can recommend is a 30 amp or 40 amp DC to DC charger and disconnect the fridge wire from the 12 pin plug. If it is one of those fridges that senses the voltage coming from the tow vehicle to switch to 12v you need to connect the fridge to the DC to DC charger output and with a suitable diode in line connect the house battery to the DC to DC output as well. This way the fridge will only be powered from the DC to DC charger when it is powered by the tow vehicle, the diode stops the current flowing back out of the house battery to power the fridge but allows the current from the DC to DC charger to top up the house battery.

If you don't disconnect the fridge wire from the 12 pin plug or at the back of the fridge you will create a loop and send the DC to DC output back to the tow vehicle and then back into the DC to DC input, this generally causes a melt down of either the 12 pin plug, the Anderson plug or the fuse and/or fuse holder at each end of the Anderson plug lead. Replaced a few so it is a real event, not theoretical.

 That is the way it should be.

Refer to Thetford manual for correct method of wiring.biggrin

Separate feeds  for each of suitable sized cable  based on  run length & minimizing voltage drop under full load current 

The fuse can be slightly above the max expected  load current, or the cable current rating.[but no greater]

Thank you all for your reply s what started as an easy job is rapidly turning into a nightmare. I have been powering the fridge and batteries with no problems on my old van with two circuits I think I will contact the the manufacturer and ask him to set it up like our old van. thank you again

Would suggest a separate andersen plug for batteries and fridge.

Had this set up for a few years now and have found the fridge operates much better via an anderson plug, than it did through a 12 pin plug.
