Health benifits of Manuka Honey? Advice please

G'day everyone,

Just wondering if anyone has ever used Manuka honey for any particular complaint and its worked a treat or not at all - especially interested in say extremely bad skin ulcers where traditional medication hasn't done much. I'm just after some first hand experience in the health benefits of actual usage. Many thanks.

Going back a few years now. I have used Manuka Honey on an ulcer on my lower leg. Had the ulcer for 2 1/2 years. Over the first year it grew from something smaller than my little fingernail to half the size of my palm and during this time I (with Dr) tried quite a few different things. The manuka honey was more of a last resort, worked but I was extremely sensitive to it. It hurt like hell after I put it on so was only using it once every two days. The hurt like hell was an hour in a lot of pain where I just could not do anything to a second hour where the pain gradually subsided. My routine on those days was: Boil water and let it cool down. Take old dressing off (I was using a combination of dressings that were not waterproof). Have shower. Get dressed and stand out in sun for 5 - 6 minutes so the sun shone on the ulcer (no longer than this doctor told me). Make up solution of the boiled water which was still warm, with salt added and dissolved. Clean ulcer with solution soaked gauze and let this soaked gauze sit on the ulcer for about 10 minutes. Pat dry with clean piece of dry gauze then apply manuka honey. Then put on fresh dressing. The pain would come almost instantaneously. But it worked. If I wasn't so sensitive to it and used it every day the outcome probably would have been faster healing but I could only take so much. Once the ulcer was healed I had vein surgery on that leg. The specialist wouldn't do the surgery while I had the ulcer. The manuka honey came in a tube and I bought it from the chemist. I did have regular GP visits and like I said we tried various other things - the seaweed stuff, the silver dressings etc. Hope this information is of some help to you.
Cheers.

Not too long ago this topic was investigated in "Trust Me, I'm a doctor" on ABC or SBS, not sure which station. They confirmed that all honey have disinfectant properties, some more than others. But the hype around Manuka has been debunked. It's apparently no different than other natural honey.

I, too, heard that about Manuka honey - no different that a quality natural honey - and possibly cheaper.

Used pure honey, not Manuka years ago to heal tropical ulcers in PNG. Use in conjunction with powders food grade gelatine packed like a poultice and covered for 24 hours before replacing. Heals from within.

They have found in recent studies that Jarrah honey from WA has a much higher content of the active ingredients that promote healing than Manuka or any other honey. Also it does not goes crystalised and will always stay in liquid form. Now highly sort after.

I read that too, that all honey has antibiotic properties, I remember thinking perhaps the cost of Manuka honey will come down!
