If a vans stated max ball weight is exceeded, what then, does the "A frame" bend, what if the ball weight does this and goes up to 15% of the vans weight, does the sky fall in. I wonder how many boaties towing their boats sweat over ball weight, and heavens what about those with a trailer full of rubbish going to the tip, the mind boggles.
As far as I am concerned, positive weight on the tow bar is all that's required, this is ensuring the centre of gravity is forward of the wheels.
Anyhow what sort of tow vehicle have we been talking about? is it even suitable to tow a caravan full stop.
My above posts still stand, but I do hope you get a suitable van for your travels.
I apologise - I misread my own photo. You are correct the ATM is 1500. I too quickly looked at the GTM. Therefore any lambasting based on that I retract.
However, you are again incorrect about that van being inappropriate for a car with a 100kg limit. These types of vans are made for that kind of car! This is Orstralyan thinking applied to a European setup. Just plain wrong. It CERTAINLY is not illegal! Any pom could load it fine. Yes if a bogan aussie loads slabs of xxxx under the bunks you'll go way over.
Because montie, unlike some I am willing to investigate, learn and inform myself of things I do not know rather than preach and lecture of things I misunderstand. Also, I am willing to admit when I am wrong and question if my understanding is correct. I thought there may be some like minded people on here that with years of experience would be able to answer my straightforward question easily and maybe even point to some official source to prove it. How wrong I was.
So subsequent to posting the original question I did some research and found the answer myself. Job done.
So that all us dumb bogans can understand. Do you mind putting up the answer so we can be enlightened?
Gday...
Stretch ... good idea - why should we bogans be kept in the dark ... and praps provide the original question in plain English because I am totally flummoxed on jest what the hell it woz.
Cheers - John

van loaded expect upto 150kgs [ loaded weight not specified ]
Vehicle cannot tow this and get full use of van .Pointless ...
Unfortunately u r placing yourself in a poor position insurance wise . The first excuse not to pay will be ........
wfdTamar,
I think I know where you are coming from. If you are able to tow the van within the van and vehicle specifications, then you are okay, ie 100 kg towball weight as per tow vehicle specs. I think the salesperson erred by assuming you would load the van to the van's max towball weight (150 kg) not your vehicle's 100 kg towball weight limit. He should not have objected to you purchasing the van. How you load it is up to you, providing you keep everthing within specs. However, in my opinion, a van with a tare of 1220 kg would require a towball weight of more than 100 kg, particually when loaded, especially for Australian conditions in comparision to European conditions which these vans are designed for. But that is another issue.
Whether or not you think you can legally tow this in the UK is irrelevant, these are the rules here.
If you load this van with its max payload, which is not huge by any means, you will end up with a ball load greater than you can tow with you car.
Any sort of load is going to add more than 20kgs to the ball and exceed your cars limits. Trust me I have been towing these things around for 47 years.
You have been given some excellent advice by both the dealer and several people on this forum. I would respectfully suggest that you not be foolish and heed that advice.
Well personally I would rather be the no deal dealer than the OP.
To be honest there was not really a question in the original post but more a statement of information from a van compliance plate, the apparent rating of the tow vehicle and what he was told by a dealer..
If the OP chooses to buy it and tow it then I say, go for it if you are happy.
edit;
Rocky already indicated that there was no question actually asked..!!
