Do any of you RV'ers with built in grey water tanks have a level guage and do they work. The Jayco system of three probes reading to the tank guage soon gets grudded up and gives false readings, am thinking of installing a float switch instead of.
My jayco has a clear plastic hose about 16m.m size. from the tank which curves up to the back bumper which it is fixed to with a saddle, hose has a push in plug in the end, You simply look at the hose to see what level the fluid is,

There is a gauge on my grey water tank, but I have never used it
I shall take your word the Jayco level gauge is not accurate, as mine only seems to show one bottom red light
I was told, (and have no reason to disbelieve it), by Grey Nomads at Greens Lake that...
After twenty four hours, because of the bacteria, etc, grey water turns into black water, and that black water should not be dropped onto the ground
When I am in a caravan park, there is usually a grey water drain, where I poke my grey water hose, so the tank is more or less, always empty
Now (after post Greens Lake advice), when free camping, I give a tree or shrub, a drink, after each shower use
I use a dedicated grey water bucket for this task
A clean with a paper towel, and left in the sun for a short time, leaves no smell inside the bucket
If I know that my next stop will be at a camp with a dump point, but no water facilities, I will leave my last shower water, in the grey water tank
If I need to empty my toilet, I will use this grey water to clean the dump point after use
There is . gauge/meter available called a Topargee, fits in the delivery line after the Pump supposed to give you a reading of how much water is left to use. have not seen it or used it Mate of mine bought one recently to take back to NZ for his caravan.

I have 3 of them in my van, one for each tank. They work perfectly so I always know, to the litre. how much 'useable' water remains in my tank.
If I were to fit a grey water tank it would be a simple matter of watching what comes out of my tanks, this would be the amount in the grey tank.

I was thinking that a float switch at the three quarter level point, turning on a warning light would be all that's needed, those float switches are pretty robust and can operate in fouled water. All of the waste water our van expels goes through the grey water tank, so the Topargee system would be a bit confused.
Normally the grey water tank would be empty, but if stopped at a town van park, by day three, we would have a full grey water tank, wouldn't want it over flowing on the ground.
Like Delta18, we have three tanks with electronic display level indicators for each. The grey water tank ideally is empty whenever on the move to better balance the caravan, but on some occasions we have had to drive many kilometers before finding suitably remote vegetation deserving of the water. The only complaint about the level meters is that they only show full, 3/4, 1/2, 1/4 and empty and are rather inaccurate at that.
We found that every few years after a build up on the probes we add chlorine, with water, to the tank , drive around for a while and then drain. Works for us.
