Iam considering a chip or ecu mod, my 2.5 Mitsubishi diesil struggles on the really steep inclines towing the van2.1 ton,a guy parked next to my rig to day with a 3ton rig being towed by the same car as mine,heres his advice,dont chip it,have the ecu modified for more grunt, any one here modified there engine to release more power from a factory spec engine ..
I would do the basics first ... Free up the air in .....and air out...IE...fit a snorkle to get more clean , cool , fresh air...and then a better more free flowing exhaust to get rid of the now burnt air...paying attention to dump pipe and as small a muffler that you can get away with. Then think about stuffing around with the electronics....but tread VERY carefully here .....and get it dyno tuned after whichever good quality you pick.

Yes Ron I had a modified ecu fitted to the defender. they had the car for about 1/2 hour and it came out with about 30 % more power. The thing to remember is that the manufacturer had designed the car that way to protect the vehicle engine and transmission so use the extra power with caution . I would also advise the fitting of an EGT gauge pre turbo so as you can monitor manifold temperature when you put the foot down. Landy

My advice call someone like Berrima Diesel or any other long established reputable diesel specialist , and ask for their advice. Playing around with your ecu is akin to a top athlete , they can jog all day long , when they sprint sure as eggs they get a strain. The car is set up by experts for a world market with various tolerances so it can "jog"all day. Sure it can sprint but at what cost .

The reality is u need a bigger engine .
Programming an ECU is lucky dip really . All this was started in the 90`s some worked some did not . U need to go to a diesel specialist with a lot of experience B4 deciding .

external plug in chip lower performance than ECU but reliable
Egr delete
Engine breathing /crankcase vent either separate or dump
There are report of engine failures when boosted alot . Remember it will be xtra fuel /fuel timing /fuel pressure / controlling waste gate /blow off valve .. All this pllaces more pressure on engine internals at least . Plus the clutch /g/box etc etc
Thanks for all your advice ,as far as leavin factory settings in place to be on the safe side,are not the factory settings the problem in the first place, as Being governed by stringent emissions control,rather then peak performance output?
Make sure fuel supply is 100 % . When this is done . Take extra care not to lag engine . Still keep rpm in sweet spot . Although itās diesel . They like rpm or turbo melts engine and trans . Often a tweak to ECU auto trans on load settings to down shift if auto ? As they are as said tuned to emissions, fuel consumption!! Tuff little engines . Tune CORRECT tune is fine ! Just be aware of higher ratio aspect tyres also . They are fine comfort, grip wise . But can take away engine pulling power from higher gearing .

If your car is a manual, be aware that chipping it for more power could affect the multi-plate flywheel.
You could look at gas injection (Diesel-Gas Australia - www.dieselgasaustralia.com.au/. ) Gas is still available in most places in Victoria & it's cheaper than in other states. Contact Graeme in Adelaide (1800 805 9930 for a dealer near you. Bear in mind that autogas is becoming scarcer in other states (Coles Shell have stopped carrying it in Qld). I put the system on my GQ Nissan when the car had done 240,000kms; on my current GU at 280,000kms - have done over 420,000 now. I'm happy with the power & fuel consumption.
I was told by a mechanic in Toowoomba that whatever you do generally adds just a bit of power each time - eg snorkel, bigger exhaust & may or may not improve your fuel consumption.
Take Mezza's advice (Berrima Diesel) & check the Mitsubishi forums. Whatever you do will hit you in the pocket one way or the other.

Theres Nothing wrong with mine going into lymp mode when stressed its a safety feature built into them,it only happened a few times on those hills that never seem to end on very steep rises,I travel with my brother in law frequently and his does exactly the same thing,the guy that services the auto says its common with the Triton motor when over stressed.
Its hard to believe that yours never struggles on monster hills towing 2.6 tons .you must have super Triton ...

Your right its definitely overheating the transmission ,transmission cooler is stock on these cars,the temperature increase on the transmission is because the poor little diesil is working its backside off,climbing huge hills,lymp mode is common with the small Triton engine towing under extreme conditions, its all over the net, were not the only ones ,what I was fishing for here is a response from someone that has done the mod,the scanguage makes a lot of sense but it needs more grunt thats the real answer....
Best bet would be to join the Triton owners forum and ask them , I have a mate with a Triton he has a Roo Systems ECU reflash he did gain more power , how much I dunno .
All autos have a stock cooler , it's just in the bottom of the radiator, I imagine the Triton is the same , a extra cooler in front of the radiator is probably a good idea and a ScanGauge to see how hot it's actually getting.
A tune or a chip for more power , I doubt will help the auto temp , so it will probably still go into limp mode .
Jacko a tune chip is definitely the answer about a year ago I was camped alongside a guy that was towing a big van with a challenger,he had the mod done and temp gauge fitted it absolutely transformed the car,I wrote down all the info,forgot about it lost the info my memory is not what it used to be ...
I fail to see what most of the argument on chip Vs ECU modification is all about. After all, all you are doing is remapping your ECU whether you do it by modifying its characteristics internally or doing it externally with a chip. Either way you end up being able to stress your vehicle more than the manufacturer intended it to be. You are also modifying the emissions output of your engine either way.
Getting back to your vehicle struggling. Many consider that their vehicle is struggling if they can not top a hill without uch drop in speed. How many of the trucks on the road are considered to be struggling when they are climbing steep hills at 20 to 60 km/h? I just consider that they are doing their job well and are just working hard. It is the same with out tugs. The only time I consider mine to be struggling on a difficult hill is when I am down in first gear and I look like I will not get the rig over without great heaps of torque converter slippage.
I consider that when members talk about their vehicles struggling it is more a case of attitude. By being a little patient you will get to your destination a little after the others would. If you can be satisfied to climb hills a little slower you can save heaps of cash by keeping your current rig as is. You can often get better performance by selecting a lower gear when the auto box is a little reluctant to changing down. It does not hurt your engine to rev to near red-line (they are built to rev these days.)
If you still wish to be a rev head then get a high performance vehicle rather than modifying your current one.

As said it depends on tune . Have family member who tunes all types of vehicles. He also changes the shift points so auto / engines works better for TOWING . As the initial tune is set towards economy . Often adds a little more boost ? But not to the point of engines durability. Keeping intake temps low . Why often a chip is frowned at ? Itās often a generic tune . While a re-map is real time individual engine tune . Best to upgrade coolers when towing also !! Depending on vehicle .
Steinbauer offer a 30 day money back if you are not satisfied with the improvement , or at least they did ( I think they still do )
Why don't you take up that offer , if you are not satisfied give it back and try a tune .

Read my post properly and maybe you will understand ,the real problem is going into lymp mode jamming in second gear its a real pain sometimes you cant pull over ,I hope you now understand,this needs to be fixed....

the auto gearbox is perfection 98% of the time the problem only exists when the engine is really struggling big time ,gee can the engine struggling have anything to do with it Maybe just maybe that could be the problem

You asked for advice, mine was and is put a transmission cooler on. that help with the motor going into limp mode. This advice is given from experience,Whether you accept that advice graciously or carry on like a muppet is up to you.
Gee all the people on the Mitsubishi forums that have this problem just simply had to put a cooler on an engine that already has one,everyone but you must be a dummy for not thinking about such a simple answer to the problem ,thats not the answer no way is that even close...
