Throw whatever spin on it you like but foreign aid is buying farmers and businesses markets in those countries and every country able to do it do. Yes it is equivalent to a bribe but it does help our farmers, Indonesia buys ship loads of our beef alone so get off the aid hobby horse there is more to it if you bother to be informed.
Apart from the current angst about foreign aid etc I always find it is mind-blowingly incredulous that SOMEONE hasn't picked up on the government reasons for not funding things.
Hospital funding is not sustainable; Medicare is not sustainable, old age pension spending is not sustainable; newstart spending is not sustainable, spending on roads is not sustainable; the funding of nurses is not sustainable; teacher expenditure is not sustainable; I could go on and on.
However, when did you hear a pollie say that the submarine expenditure is unsustainable; or the Joint Strike Fighter expenditure is unsustainable; or Defence spending in itself is unsustainable.
Jest sayin'
Cheers - John

sometimes Keith ... do you read your posts back to yourself?
I think you have gone a bit in circles.
Tropical/sub-tropical = more sperm = more population
Warmer areas have poverty and slums = inability to support large populations.
So, there is no poverty and slums in tropical/sub-tropical areas (ya bin to SE-Asia recently?) or very cold climates but there are poverty and slums in warmer climes?
Melbourne has a population of 4.3million - Port Moresby has a population of 350,000 - Ho Chi Minh City 3.4million - Stockholm 952,000 - Tokyo 9.2million - Anchorage 300,000 - wonder where the highest sperm counts are?
Not sure where your arguments originate from - but it is definitely food for thought. It could go for hours around the campfire wif an ale or two.
Cheers - John

SNIP~~~If you notice, a lot of natural disasters like earthquakes, cyclones, volcanic eruptions & tsunamis occur in heavily populated areas.
It's God's method of keeping the population numbers down.
Gday...
I think that it is only when such events occur where there are population areas that they are widely reported and become 'news'.
Earthquakes etc are occurring regularly around this globe - and not all are anywhere near 'heavily populated' areas - but rather at the fault lines around the globe.

I thought I'd quote you John. Not because I wanted to add anything but just because it was worth repeating

There Comes a time in life, when you must walk away from all drama and the people who create it.
It all boils down to birth control in overpopulated areas, we should be sending them condoms not money.
Whoah! Where did that come from? And WTF does it have to do with foreign aid?
If you're concerned about sending money overseas for "aid" what did you do about the various appeals for aid for OUR farming communities?
Just for the record, the farmers are doing it tough, but so are the communities that they will rely on when the drought breaks (and for a few years after that as well!) - and spare a thought (or a few bucks) for the cropping farmers who don;t have starving stock, but are doing it just as tough, and likely to be without income for quite some time - their winter crops this year are likely a total loss and their next winter crop planting will be this time NEXT YEAR, with a harvest around December NEXT YEAR, but only IF there's a decent amount of rain between now and this time next year!
