Eggbeater anniversary

#Onthisday In 1947, the first Royal Australian Air Force helicopter was test flown at RAAF Base Laverton by Squadron Leader K V Robertson.

I know they shouldn't fly and how dangerous they are but I've always loved them.

Love hate relationship. Bloody magic if you are shipwrecked and the Big Yellow beast turns up to save your life.

Bloody horrible to go through the Ditching procedure in the Mock up in the Pool. Scary as.

My youngest son did the Helicopter crash in pool scenario when he was in the Army, he thought it was great fun, but I reckon it's not as bad as the Davis escape chamber at Portsmouth UK.

Worst of all IMHO was the first parachute jump with no static line and you have to pull a ripcord - That's terrifying.

Saw the Tank in HMS Dolphin in Pompey, No way for me.

I was in Malta when they did some deep escapes from a Sub. 300' ascent with no scuba tank just a shroud that was open to the sea but trapped enough  air to surface while expelling air all the way Up.

I'm a proponent of never jumping out of a perfectly good aircraft so another No-No from me.

As one who made some 30 jumps 60 yrs ago I can describe it thus..

First time = abject sweaty palms terror.

Second time = some apprehension.

Third time= not so bad.

Next twenty seven = total exhilaration!!
