Saw that for the first time recently as well. Whatever happened to Mary Mason, is she still travelling? It one a lot of awards apparently that Documentary and is even well known in the US.

I had seen it years ago on t.v and forgotten about it. WOW it has more meaning now that I'm on the road full time.

Goes to show you don't need all the modern must have stuff to still enjoy the adventure smile .

In 2001, we were travelling around NW NSW. We were going from Tiboorburra to Innaminca via Camerons Corner, in the sand dunes about 20 km West from Innaminca, and came across a 4 yr old Nissan Bluebird with about 100 mm ground clearance, towing a 12 ft back door caravan. I had just crested a dune and when I saw the oncoming rig, I moved over as far left as possible to give them good clearance. I was checking the left mirror as they went past. My wife said "That was a woman driving that car, and she was alone". We both thought that her husband must have been feeling crook (we were feeling a bit woozey ourselves from the ups and downs of the dunes. When we got to Innaminca, and checked in a the pub, the publican asked us which way we had come. We told him via Camerons Corner. He then asked if we had seen a 74 yr old woman towing a caravan. We told him that we had and that she was going OK. "That's good", he said. "We were a bit worried about her". The next day we returned to Tiboorburra where we had left our caravan and we found the lady in the caravan park.

Apparently she had lost her husband a few years before and one day she decided that she wanted to see the country. So she bought a caravan and headed off, much to her family's angst. They gave her a mobile phone and told her to contact them when she was within range. The lady was thoroughly enjoying herself. I sincerely hope that she is still doing it. She was a very nice lady. She could set up her rig by herself, except for reversing it, when she got someone else to do it for her. She had a dream and was living it. Full marks to her.

There was statement made by the couple in the Coaster, "never needed a doctor while away for 3 months, come home a week and start making arrangements to see doctors". How true is that.

I sure speaking for both of us we are healthier, probably more in touch with each other, life is very kind to us.

Absolutely magic.

We have done a lot of that for all the same reasons but I was lucky and was able to travel with my wife of now 57 years.

We usually travelled north and west all over Qld. and further west every year and tried to take a new route every trip.

We eventually ran out of roads to take that were different.

Once you get off the coast and into the interior a bit, life becomes less hectic and with a bit of care stopping for a night or two on a steram is life worth living.

She is of aboriginal descent. Apparently she got as far as Broome or Port Hedland and found her tribe. That was as far as she got for some time. I don't know if she proceeded after her sojourn there.

To the others not in the know, that was shown on the AVC TV in a few episodes. The title of that show was the start of the general use of the term"grey nomads." I have not seen the show since the original ABC showing.

Grey Nomads, just another thing to blame the ABC for.

What a ripper of a find...good to see the similarity from then to today despite the advancements.

Those old stone guards across the windscreen; used to see them everywhere as a kid in the back seat.

Always feel so much better when you are away. Then comes the time when you know you have to return home. Cannot wait for the day that we can just keep on going & not worry about restraints on having to come back.
