More one liners...

In my many years I have come to a conclusion that one useless man is a shame, two is a law firm and three or more is a government.

John Adams

If you don't read the newspaper you are uninformed, if you do read the newspaper you are misinformed.
Mark Twain

Suppose you were an idiot.  And suppose you were a member of government. But then I repeat myself.
Mark Twain

I contend that for a nation to try to tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle.
Winston Churchill

A government which robs Peter to pay Paul can always depend on the support of Paul.
George Bernard Shaw

Giving money and power to government is like giving whiskey and car keys to teenage boys.
P.J. O'Rourke,  Civil Libertarian

I don't make jokes. I just watch the government and report the facts.
Will Rogers

If you think health care is expensive now, wait until you see what it costs when it's free!
PJ. O'Rourke

In general, the art of government consists of taking as much money as possible from one party of the citizens to give to the other.
Voltaire   (1764)

The government is like a baby's alimentary canal, with a happy appetite at one end and no responsibility at the other.

Ronald Reagan

The only difference between a tax man and a taxidermist is that the taxidermist leaves the skin.
Mark Twain

What this country needs are more unemployed politicians.
Edward Langley,  Artist (1928-1995)

A government big enough to give you everything you want, is strong enough to take everything you have.
Thomas Jefferson

We hang the petty thieves and appoint the great ones to public office.
Aesop

Hi Paul.

The scary bit is so many we know are true.

I love Churchill quote.

Mark Twain certainly knew how to make comment.

Still giggling. Ralph.

Yes, the first Mark Twain quote that Paul listed prompted me to post this....

Mark Twain visited Australia and made comments about certain areas. I remember reading his comments about the City of Newcastle. Anyone that has been to Newcastle would know that it has a large cemetery about 20 kilometres to the west and a very long main street. the main street was the old Pacific Highway. It also has an exclusive club for elite businessmen in the centre of town.

His comments went along the line of" Newcastle has a cemetery at one end with no bodies in it, a main street in the middle with nothing built on it and a gentlemens' club at the far end with no gentlemen."

Imagine the tirade one would receive if you upset him.

Dmaxer although that saying about Newcastle is well known and has been credited to Mark Twain there is no proof that he actually said those words. The closest they can come up with is from a letter he wrote to a friend back in San Francisco i.e.   Newcastle is a quaint little coal mining township on the east coast of Australia. It is unique that it has one long main street with a hospital at one end and a cemetary at the other.

He was actually pretty positive about his 1895 visit to the city and even penned a nice letter to a local dentist after having to have a bad tooth extracted. Just a suspicion but I bet that someone from a  Sydney newspaper probably modified his words ......biggrin

Cheers

BB

True story - supposedly.

A reporter rings up Government House and asks if is true that Hazel Hawke was raped by an occupant of the Tent Embassy in front of Parliament House.

Bob's press secretary says a definite NO!

Headlines in a now defunct newspaper "Parliament House denies Hazel Hawke was raped by an occupant of the Tent Embassy". True but a whole crock of misleading sh1t.
