I'm currently peddling a 2013, 200 series cruiser, GXL; but its not practical as far as storage space and ease of accessibility for long time on road. However it does the job brilliantly towing my 2200kg van (unloaded).
I`m considering purchasing the VW Amarok. Comes in 4 specks.
I would love to hear from any members/owners that have one; and am keen to hear any pros and cons.
Looking forward to your replies.
Regards.
Hetho.

don't know if they have changed the air induction system but about 4 yrs ago while I was a spare parts manager in broome I had to chase a replacement engine because of a total failure from driving through about 100 mm of water. The vehicle haD ABOUT 1500KM ON IT.
Also if your van only weighs 2.2kg it would surely fit in your pocket.
cheers

What makes you think the Amarok has a CVT transmission?
In the article that your links goes to, it says it has an 8-speed ZF automatic gearbox.
Then there's this -
Volkswagen has increased the appeal of its award-winning Volkswagen Amarok range with the introduction of an innovative 8-speed automatic transmission on dual cab models, powered by the new TDI420 engine.
I believe Amarok had a DSG transmission, which was discontinued some time ago, but that is not a CVT.
"In a nutshell, the DSG is, in fact, a conventional manual gearbox inside with either one or two clutches (the twin-clutch is a later, more sophisticated version). But instead of relying on the driver to push the clutch pedal and select the gears, a computer does all that for you."
I traded in my Amarok Core a few months ago. I used it to tow a Jayco Silverline 20" van. I had the vehicle for 2 years and did 80000 kms in it. I found it terrific. The 8 speed box is great and it has plenty of power with the twin turbos. Fuel economy was also also quite good. I was getting 8 to 9 litres per 100 kms with normal driving and about 17 per 100 with the van attached. The tub is the biggest in its class and there was plenty of internal cabin room in the vehicle.
I traded it in on a Ford Ranger for 2 main reasons:-
1. the XLT Ranger came with a safety pack. Although VW has these safety packs, they do pot put them on their Amarok vehicles.
2. The Amarok that I was looking at had a RRP of about $56000 whereas the 3.2 XLT Ranger cost $48000 "on road" with the safety pack included.
I have now done 16000 kms in the Ranger and I am very pleased with it but I would have happily purchased an Amarok if it were not for the above 2 reasons. Good luck and Merry Xmas.
Have an Amarok Core 420 for the last 2 years and used it for touring and 4wdriving. No towing. It's a very capable vehicle off-road and the 8 speed automatic is a marvel. Lots of room inside, very quiet and very comfortable seats. I get around 8l/100km when doing an average of 90km/hr.

Yes, there are too many members who do not research before they post critical info. When people ask for information they want it on current models and conditions.

Hetho, my Rok is three weeks old, V6 Highline. Bloody beautiful car to drive and will easily pull your van and a load in the tray if you wanted. 8 speed transmission is smooth and works a treat. The previous post about selling an Amarok to buy an Audi? same same. Audi and VW same company.

Stretch60, What is the bit about Amarok and Audi on your post? I cannot find any reference to it (Imay be blind).
Perhaps the post referred to is the third post on this thread,by Possum3? Seems that Stretch60 simply was referencing that post....at least, thats the way I see it? Cheers
The 8 speed auto in the Amarok is definitely a conventional unit. It's the ZF 8HP and was nominated this year by Car and Driver magazine as the world's best auto box. From the article - "some 3.5 million 8HP transmissions were built for a laundry list of manufacturers that includes Aston Martin, BMW, Fiat Chrysler, Jaguar Land Rover, and the Volkswagen Group". It's a reliable unit, by all accounts.
I had a 4 cylinder auto Amarok for 5 years - 125,000 km which included city, highway & some mid-level off-road work. A great touring vehicle. It was reliable, and the most comfortable of the dual cabs I test drove (most of the competitors). Gave great fuel economy too. Towing was restricted to 2 x 800 km stints towing about 2 tonnes. Handled it well, but fuel consumption was about 14-15l/100 km. I believe if you were towing near the limit you'd definitely know it. The V6 would more than compensate.
I only traded it in on the Jeep at end of lease because the co-driver wanted a wagon so the dogs could go in the back and not on the seats. I'd get a V6 for towing our van (2,700 kgs max) in a flash if I got another dual cab.
