Hello every one , merry Xmas. First time caller. I have bought a BT50 3.2 lt with a 6 speed manual gearbox in 2014, my 2000 Windsor crown weighs loaded up at 2.4 tonne. I have done just under 5000 KLM towing the van, my BT has 79000 klm on the clock & has a rumbling noise coming from the gearbox & grates going into 3rd & 4th. I would like to know if anyone has had the same issues & if so did mazda treat them kindly

Hi Steve....BT50s are well known for killing the 6 speed box, usually before 50,000km.Cant help with any advice about whether Mazda will come to the party with a remedy, but I will wish you good luck! Cheers
G'day Steve,
First off - welcome to a forum that generally gives good info to camper, caravan towing & motorhome owners. Most of it is based on experiences gained at work & pleasure, touring around. Please excuse some of us if we get stuck on an issue, a bit argumentive - we do try to help.
And you've reached a Nissan owner here & I have no idea when my car last saw a dealer - certainly not in the six years that I've had it & I doubt whether the chap I bought it off had been there either. The first two owners may have been customers. Have you had a look in the BT50 Forum? Or in this forum's "Search" tab?
You may get more replies here too as that car is one of the more popular "tugs". I assume from what you are saying that your car has a manual transmission. Is the oil level correct?
If the car is still covered by a warranty, see what Mazda say about the problem. If not you may be better off going to a gearbox specialist.

I don't have a BT50 but I have wrecked a Discovery 2 manual by towing in 5th gear. Interestingly when mine failed it was most noisy in second and third.
I've had a bit of a read about the BT50 manual 6 speed and from what I can see it's an overdrive 6th gear and the gearbox is prone to "trouble" if 6th is used for towing. It seems to be generally accepted that towing in overdrive top gear can be a recipe for disaster for any gearbox especially if towing heavy loads up hill.

Hi Mark. What you suggest is absolutely true, with the vast majority of gearboxes having the overdrive gear hanging off the back of the gearbox on an unsupported shaft. The BT50 has a 5th gear ratio of 1:1,with the 6th gear being .794:1,so best with that car to always tow in 5th gear unless there is little load load from things like wind and positive gradients. As I said earlier, this gearbox often gives trouble before 50,000km,possibly from towing in 6th gear.Cheers

Welcome to the forum harry Butler if you want more info from BT50 owners try the Caravanners Forum "Dedicated Owners Section" if the subject hasn't already been covered just ask them the question. I've got some really good info from that forum for both the previous Pajero Sport and the current Grand Cherokee and it usuall comes without any of the usual negative comments or advice on buying something else.
hello every one mazda replaced the gear box , I was told that 79000 klm was one of the reasons & also that all the evidence fell with in the guidelines of replacement. I cannot fault Wollongong mazda.
Could suggest then, only tow in 5th when doing really easy, consider 4th for most of the time, never 6th. You will be in correct torque band and probably save on fuel as well.
