I think yobarr is some kind of eggspurt himself he has used phrases such as common sense and logic and even physics without knowing length od draw bar the distance from tow ball to rear axle and distance of pivot point to axle of trailer, its a bit like trying to move a heavey weight with a crowbar yobarr put the fulcrum in the right place and you can move heavy things even if your not smart and have knowledge of physics and such things
Hi Folks, looking for another tug one that can tow at least 3 tonne + considering a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited 3l diesel with 8 sp automatic has all the right spec's Appreciate your personal experiences.
Yes Dave, We have a Grand Cherokee Overland. It's our second, the first a 2012 model and this one a 2016 which I wanted because of the 8 speed box. Totally happy with both vehicles, especially after the two Range Rovers we had previously.
We travel mainly in NSW, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia, so I suppose we haven't been as far as most but we still travel wherever we want without fear. We tow a medium size van, a Jayco Outback, 21 feet long with a double slideout. It's not light but we can travel as fast and certainly as far as any other.
I cannot guarantee that your prospective purchase will be as good as ours, and I certainly won't be putting crap on any other vehicle or claiming Jeeps are the best, but for my money, my next vehicle (should I decide to replace this one) will probably be a Jeep Grand Cherokee.

I wasnt going to bother responding to this rant, but I have decided to give it a go,in the unlikely event that I can help someone understand. The TBO of a Jeep, and indeed any vehicle, cannot be reduced without major body work, but frequently is increased by the addition of a WDH,and, even worse, the much-adored McHitch. The longer the TBO,the less stable is the vehicle, and the more weight is applied to the rear axle of the car.As an example,I will use the LC200 which has a wheelbase of 2850mm and a TBO that usually is around 1400mm-1500mm.This means that a ball weight of 350kg transfers 520kg to 535kg to the rear axle of the car.My car has a wheelbase of 3180mm,and a TBO of only 1200mm so a ball weight of 350kg transfers only 480kg to my rear axle.....Im sure youd agree that 55kg is a significant difference, particularly in a car that already has a lightweight rear axle? The distance from the pivot point to the axle of the van is of little significance if the ball weight is 350kg,as always youll add 480kg to 535kg to the cars rear axle. What some dont seem to understand is that there is NO WAY that a car with a GVM of 2949kg can SAFELY tow a van that has a GTM greater than 2680kg...NO WAY. (ATM would be 2950kg). Any talk of travelling A Million kms with no problem, and Driving to the conditions is no more than waffle.I suspect that you have not actually READ my previous posts,as opposed to simply Looking at them, but all the physics are explained, along with a lot of logic, and a dose of common sense.Such things are often conspicuous by their absence.Safe and happy travels to all.Cheers
P.S I absolutely understand fulcrums,and a lot more.
Hi Yobarr, if I got a gvm upgrade on the jeep like you have on your ute, would that make it safer? Does your vehicle stop quicker now that you can carry more weight ? regards Russell
Hi Russell....If you upgraded the GVM on your Jeep, and loaded to that figure,of course it is going to be safer, assuming that you tow the same van. Then the car may well be heavier than the van,and inherently safer. Of course my car now stops more quickly,as there is more weight pressing the tyres onto the tarmac so they grip better! (I do,of course, jest!) Cheers
Never owned a Jeep myself but saw the amazing list of issues a friend had with her used 2 year old GC. Mostly electrical, all were very troublesome and the battery issue in particular cost over $1,000 to rectify and wasn't covered by the balance of the manufacturers warranty. Symptoms suggested earthing issues as vehicle would frequently not start, electrics down one side would shut off, headlights would come on or go off randomly and so on.
She went to a 5 year old Land Cruiser within 6 months of Jeep ownership and 3 years later has yet to have any trouble at all.
OK, I know that Lemons exist in every brand but reports like these are common.
I really get annoyed by the people bagging cheap, I have had laredo 4yrs and not a single problem, changed now to limited petrol as wanted more safety features which are great , pull starcraft 21ft and am really happy with car performance , whip up and down mts now hassles. ignore bagging, i am a jeep man and proud to be.

Good to see you are happy with your Jeep,Keith. Seems it doesnt take much to keep some people happy? Cheers

Thought the same as Bill B, why was this barb necessary?
Hi Dave0591,
I posted a similar thread a few months back, I have a 21ft silverline and had been towing it with a holden Colorado diesel and found it a bit lacking.
I brought a 2013 MY14 Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel with an 8 speed box and it leaves the Colorado for dead.
Getting about 17 liters per 100 km's plenty of grunt in reserve at 95km/phr and the larger tanks means less stress about fuel stops.
Jeep also handles really well.
It's nice to just cruise now rather than feeling like Im push the car too hard.
Just remember to use a WDH with the larger van.
Ignore all the Jeep bashers, the question is "Can the Jeep do it" and the answer is "Yes" with ease.
