Yes, no matter what chemistry battery used, a BMS (Battery Management System) is a must to save getting stuck or killing the battery. The BMS we build has a safety battery isolation at 5% SOC so there is always enough left to start a diesel engine no matter what size and enough to power the essentials like the fridge and a few lights for 5 hrs or so. If the battery drops out while you were away exploring, you can start up the engine and put some back in with DC to DC charger or just move out of a dangerous situation like the one mentioned.
By the way, $10,000 worth of 12v lithium battery is an enormous capacity battery, that is roughly the battery capacity that powers the off grid 6 bedroom house that serves 5 families and powered 8kW of 240vac inverters. You need to see and hear the Honda generator that is required as a partial back up, it doesn't have the capacity to provide what the battery pack can provide so power must be rationed, but it does have a shed with sound insulation big enough for the average bloke's workshop and storage, but it's still incredibly noisy even with all the sound deadening.
