RE: Generator ( Sorry yes another one )

I think people that start their generators ,only start them because they need the power and not because they

want to annoy their neighbours .I have had to start my genny on the odd occasion and  the neighbours when asked didn't mind.

Tolerance is a great thing and we should all practice it.What goes around comes around.smile

Yes funny things happen out there . We have camped overnight out in the middle 1000s from nearest town . Start the geni or watch some sport on sat TV ? Next morning you get a knock in the door for making too much noise !! Fair dinkum !! 100,1000 acres and camp next to us !! Then complain !!! Sheesh .

Had similar experiences. Bet they pulled in next to you whilst the gennie was running and didn't have the common sense to park a bit further away. Had one couple pull in so close to our van that they were battling to open their door. If I had rolled over in bed I would have been cuddling his missus. Fair dinkum. A 1000 acre paddock and they do that.

A few months ago there was a person running their generator. It is amazing how much the sound travels over long distances but I was prepared, I used my ear plugs together with my 36db Uvex (lime green NOT blue) earmuffs to block out the sound & also used my activated carbon face mask. I have a full breathing mask but it is a bit bulky, a mask sends a good enough message!

Just bought some more activated face masks as I gave my spare ones to someone else for same reason.

 Love it. Being rather seriously deaf, it is the low frequency sound that annoys me the most and placing the generator on the ground with nothing under it seems to create a very large sounding board that allows the vibration/sound to travel a low way.

A box over the generator to hold the sound in but better still, open towards the users van so they get to enjoy the noise rather than everyone else and that will allow the cooling that so many say is the reason for not trying to muffle the noise. Added to this thoughtful action, sit the generator on a vibration absorbing mat to reduce the vibration/sound being reflected from the ground.

Just a bit of additional thoughtfulness for others who want to enjoy the area but do not enjoy the generator noise, it is only for your benefit after all, why should everyone else suffer?

Don't give upon your hearing. Look after what is left. If you train your hearing with a lot of quite time it will recover to some degree. Every tradesman (person - political correctness) I have lent them to has been seriously impressed (although one should not lend earmuffs due to the risk of infection) it is worth getting 36db earmuffs, & if you are doing extended hours shove in some earplugs as well.

It is never too late to look after your hearing!

& safety glasses,

& activated carbon breathing mask at a minimum!

Last month I was in Tassie & gave all the safety equipment to a relative who was working at home who should have known better as he is qualified to audit working sites! (he was surprised what I carried in the car)

If you really don't have any room in your car, at least take some earplugs & wear your sunglasses if doing some dodgy work. It's not worth it, including frayed 240 volt extension leads! (not a good look to say the least!!!)

I have a 100kg Fuji Xerox printer sitting on a piece of melamine chipboard. It helps reduce the noise throght the floor affecting neighbours. Also if I need to move it for cleaning I can slide it around on the carpet. But sound wise it does make a difference.

And may I say what a very sensible approach you have to have such equipment on board. I also agree it does send a clear message eg. Go ahead with your generator , I am well equipped to accept your right to use a generator and what I am wearing is proof of that. Us generator operators could learn from your considerate approach by perhaps hoisting a red flag with a big G in it to ensure you park well away from us. Thanks to you we appear to have reach harmony at last.

Thanks, I am thinking of onboard oxygen breathing equipment for the next holiday. I already have all the airlines so it would not be much of an upgrade.

Strewth. I only wanted to know if anybody knew anything about that particular brands noise level. Remind me not to mention anything controversial at all. Hate to start a fight

1% of inconsiderate people will have no conflict with the 99% who use their more or less unlimited solar resources to power their oxegen concentrators. Problem solved!

Actually our is run max for 10 -15 minutes and thats during daylight . Only time it maybe longer is when theres two or three overcast days . Ours is built in. We try to face the bush or away from open area or campers . Some have no idea on other people and just do as they please ! Yes the 1% stuff it up for everyone !! The older cheap two strokes didnt help !! With over % of oil in fuel !

Let's face it, only those that don't give a toss and disturb others with their generator are the ones that are complained about. Who would complain about something they couldn't hear? I have had people come over and ask what brand generator we had because it was so quite they couldn't hear it  When we explained we didn't carry a generator, it was all solar, batteries and an inverter they were amazed just how far technology had come. We did have the odd know everything that told us and all who were listening that lithium batteries and solar could not possibly do what we claimed, even though all there had actually seen it doing it .....
If you can mount your generator in a way the fumes do not annoy others and the noise isn't spread beyond your own camping spot, I can't see the problem. Sadly, this type of set up is the rare event, not the 99% some seem to think, more like the 1%, but then, if you can't hear it, how would anyone know? So if it is only 1% of generator users that annoy others, there must be millions of generator uses out there wink but then, are there really that many free campers?

Hi smile

Some sensible thoughts here. Of course it is the small percent of users who annoy the others.

The same applied to motorbike users camping in parks years ago. Just settling in and a swarm of two strokes come in, do a coupe of skids or wheelies and the proceed to annoy the other campers by shouting and drinking and other stuff because someone had the hide to say something. Those people must have retired and bought gennies disbeliefdisbelief

I was in SA up at the salt lakes free camping and we choose to go perhaps 150-200 meters away from where the others were bunched together. The silence broken only by an occasional vehicle which you could hear for many miles away and leaving. Very quiet. Then at 10 PM a generator starts up. All the lights were out by then over there so WTF. It was annoying from where we were but very soon the sound of raised voices became as loud and the gennie stopped. You just wonder whether they have a brain ?? There was probably a couple of thousand square miles around there if they wanted to run a gennie. No facilities there anyway.confuse

On a lighter note the next morning about 5AM there was a big noise and truck reving and it was the garbage truck emptying the bins near the road. So the local contractor has no empathy either.hmm

Mate, don't concern yourself about it. Those that say they are apposed to noise from generators are just having a laugh really, why, because they know that it's FREE camping and all sorts of issues will upset some eg. people noise, including kids, bogan's with noise, camp fires, loud music etc, etc etc.  biggrin
