Breakaway unit, topic for discussion.

Something I have pondered about for some time, the wiring of the breakaway unit. The "Break Safe" unit, install instructions, clearly state that the power for the unit is to come from the "Aux" circuit of the vehicle, good so far.

Jayco with their trailer plug wiring diagram clearly state that the power comes from a direct battery connection, via 20A fuse. So far so good.

BUT our Jayco is fitted with a "Tow Secure" unit. The fitting instructions for that unit show the power to come from the ignition. The reason for this is that this unit comes with a wireless unit for the driver to give diagnostic warnings of the unit to comply with the NSW regulations. Each time the ignition is turned off and back on the unit runs a check and warns the driver of any faults. With the unit wired up as per the supplied Jayco instructions, the only way to get the full benefit of the diagnostic, is for a person to sit in the front of the vehicle while a second person diss-connects and reconnects the trailer plug.

I wonder how many persons out there are unaware of this, if they have the Tow Secure fitted?

And I suppose the way to fix this, is to fit a "Normally On" relay in the circuit, powered via an ignition powered supply.

When we install a Victron 712BMV, we offer the customer the option of wiring the brakesafe battery into the aux battery port. This way the 712BMV will send the information about the house battery and the brakesafe battery to the owners smart phone via bluetooth and set off an alert if any voltages are outside the pre programmed parameters. Had a few discover their brakesafe battery was actually dead, even though the press button test said it was ok. Seems the press button test actually tests the supply if it is still connected, not the battery in the unit. If the supply is wired to the house battery and the house battery is ok, the test says all is good even if the internal battery has passed on. we did try charging one up overnight just incase it had been drained excessively when the house battery failed, but it turned into a semi inflated balloon indicating that was well and truly dead.
