My Land Rover Freelander, towing on road 2000kg, off road 750kg (we don't have a towbar).
My observation in the outback is that not too many let their tyres down. When asking what pressure are you running, more often than not it is, they don't know or I didn't worry about it. It is a lot better for the car & occupants if you lower tyre pressure.

The publican at Innamincka had a bent back dual cab that he used to pick us up from the airport at the top of the hill overlooking the town. It was certainly a conversation starter.
That mag article is getting a bit old and worn out.
Hi Ralph...whilst the article is indeed more than four years old,Possum needs to be thanked for again posting it.Given the huge number of people purchasing twin-cabs,and dreaming of towing 3500kg,the message still is relevant.Perhaps it will save someone from learning an expensive lesson? Thanks Possum.Cheers

Yes, you are right about people still buying dual cabs ute hoping to 3.5 tonnes.
I will remind you all our dual cab ute grosses out at around 5.6 tonne with caravan. Now has done 120 000 kilometres, around 70% of that with the caravan hitched up.
I also use airbags.
The common dominator would be more the operator of the utes whether tray back, well back or dual or single cab utes?
Bent chassis will still happen as people buy older dual cabs and outfit them inappropriately. That would be a major part of the logic in republishing these articles. I don't recall a bent dual cab that was towing a caravan, although I'm sure they exist or existed. Most images typically feature an overloaded tray back, overly large overhand and a huge tinny packed to the gunwales. You don't see many tradies sitting roadside, late for the next job because they have a banana-cab.

Finally I have worked out how to attach a photo of my new compliance plate, from Carrolls! Probably not the right place to post it,but I am sure that it will be seen by anybody who may be interested? Cheers

Well done with being able to attach the photo.
Here is an uninteresting article I read out of popular Australian country mag that I read just the other day written by an expert motoring journalists.
This is why people think they can buy a dual cab and tow 3,5 tonnes, carry 1 tonne with 4 passengers.

And the salesperson would encourage that script.
Thanks Ralph, for posting this article.Highly irresponsible assertions by "experts" who obviously know little,or possibly have ulterior motives? The little Navara has kerb weight just under 2 ton, and alleged tow capacity of 3500kg.....yeah,right! With a 1700kg rear axle capacity,it would struggle to tow even 3000kg,and let's not even mention that a towball weight of 300kg means that the GVM drops to 2500kg! So,fully loaded,we have a 2500kg car towing a van with weight on wheels of 2700kg..... spare me! And if anybody really was silly enough to try to tow 3500kg,there would be a van with weight on wheels of 3150kg behind a car with weight on wheels of 2500kg.As well as being 150kg over the GCM of 5500kg,(5910kg minus the 410kg drop in the car's GVM)we would have a van that is 25% heavier than the car.....stupidity in the extreme, and an accident looking for a place to happen. But they're out there on the road, with their actions supported by people with an equal ignorance of weights. Cheers.
P.S Because the Navara loses 410kg from its GVM with towball weight of 350kg,the most this setup can weigh is 5500kg.With a 3500kg ATM van,and the generally accepted 10% towball weight,we have GTM of 3150kg.Take that 3150kg GTM away from allowed 5500kg,and we have only 2350kg left for the car.....can't be done,as that 2350kg includes kerb weight,(say 2000kg)and towball weight of 350kg.(We are up to 2350kg already) So we have nothing left for a driver,no passengers,no luggage,no tools,no towbar structure........nothing.And let's not even think about the load on the lightweight rear axle.Perhaps someone could challenge Nissan to show us how the Navara can tow 3500kg at all, never mind safely.......but,as always, the "out" will be that a 3500kg DOG trailer can be towed. And let's not even mention safety! Cheers
