In answer to the people who own Landrovers. If the van is wired correctly and the cars computer recognizes the van is attached (ie when indicator is on trailer icon on dash flashes) then the computer takes over and adjusts just about everything, including gear changes, torque lock up in all gears, suspension height etc). Sometimes for fun I use the paddles just to see what gear the car is in and to see if I can get better fuel economy than the car just set in Drive, and I cannot. LR is far more smarter than the run of mill cars mentioned here. I would imaging the 9 speed on the New Discovery/Discovery Sport (its not called a D5) would be the same. What I am saying applies to the D4 LR with the 8 speed box. Not sure about the 6 speed ones. There is no need to put the car in S mode, other than it raises the auto box rev range for gear changes. This is what I have gleaned from the AULRO web forum.

I have towed all my life
Trailers, boats, big boats, campers and caravans.
I generally tow in D, except for hilly areas where the transmission is hunting for gears (this also happens when not towing)
My last two cars.
Nissan Xtrail ( yeah, I know, toy 4x4)
Isuzu MUX
I have noted when I hit a serious puddle , the cruise cancels.
Every time.
So I have no issue using cruise control even in the wet.
Aqua planning can happen in any car not just rear wheel drive. Can be even worse in a front wheel drive. I have tested for and experienced this in front wheel drive vehicles. If the standing water is deep enough to overcome the tyres ability to cut through it aqua planning will result. The wheel doesn't have to stop turning to experience this.
