One needs to multiply 1973 to 2019 prices by a factor of 10.2 allowing for inflation. Don't forget on average we were earning 10.2 times less!
I remember a can of coke going from 16 cents to 17 cents an thinking I'm going to stop buying the stuff 10.2 x 17 = 1.73 don't know were you would get one that cheap today. pay was about $ 80.00 a week an that was a good wage. $2 would buy a pack of fags an a couple of beers and a bag of hot chips
I joined the Army in 1973 and one of the recruitment ads at the time was that you would be paid a full adult wage of $98 per fortnight. Excellent at 17.8 years old.
The dole then if I remember rightly was $21.00 per fortnight.
