12 volt pump not working

Hi I am hoping some one has an answer to what is going on with my 12volt Johnson XPX flow water pump in my van.

I have had the van for 18 months and never and a problem until now. The pump was working ok then 1 hour after the last usage, ie flushing the toilet and washing my hands I went to rinse a cup and nothing, the pump would not start, fuses all ok. I could find nothing amiss, we are parked in an area where there is only one tap to share with others so using the water in the tank is a must. I connected the hose from the tap  to the mains inlet on the van thinking is there an air bubble in the line? It worked the pump started to work. but my joy was short lived as 4 hours later it did the same thing, so again I connected the hose and again the pump sprang to life, the water tanks are full. Any ideas on what is going on.

At a guess you have an air leak somewhere in the plumbing.
Does the pump run when it is not delivering water, but is supposed to be? You may have to have your hand on it to tell.

Hi Peter, no the pump does not start, by it's self, unless a demand for water is called?

I will ask the question differently.
You turn on a tap for water. No water is being delivered. At that time, is the pump running, or not?

Re Peters Question... If the pump is not running I think your Pressure Switch is US.

It sounds like the non return valve in the pump.

smack it on the pointy bit with a gentle hammer, this will annoy the pressure switch a bit.
If it starts, you will need a new switch directly
If not, well, keep looking

Thank you to all those who replied. In answer to Peter, no when the tap is turned on the pump is not running, there is no movement or vibration, from the motor.

The problem has not reoccurred as yet, after the second time. This info may be of use, the pump switch was on and the tap open, nothing happened, I left both in that state, I connected the hose, onto the inlet pipe, turned on the mains tap, water flowed through the system out of the open tap in the van, the pump still did not kick in. So I turned off the pump switch and closed the tap, allowing the water pressure to build with in the pipe work. The turned the pump switch on and opened the tap in the van  to allow the mains water to flow, after about 5 seconds the pump kicked in. It has now been operating most of the day? Again it is a mystery as to what stopped it. Could it be some thing was stuck in the pressure switch and when I used the mains pressure, the water pushing on the back flow valve dislodged it?

  Ha ha...none of the hammers I've ever whacked my fingers/thumbs with have been gentle!

almost certainly the pressure switch.

If you pull it down (only the front "pointy" bit) you will find a $3 switch which is easy to replace.

Keep a spare

Ok thank you to all who replied, I have taken on board was has been stated, I pulled the pipe work apart and flushed it all, and will buy a new  switch, plus a spare.
