April unemployment figures

News headline on ABC a few minutes ago . . .

"594,000 jobs lost in April as unemployment rises from 5.2% to 6.2%"

Edited:

That means that a fully employed workforce consists of 59.4 million people . . . or 59.4 million jobs. But Australia's population is only 25 million, with an employable workforce of 10 - 12 million (?), so maybe the average worker has 5 or 6 jobs?

smile.Perhaps that's just 6.2% of EMPLOYABLE people. They probably don't include under 16 y.o., disabled or old grey nomads like us. Cheers, ... Val

There so many figures being thrown around it's anyone's guess as to what the real facts are.

I was in Brookvale in Sydney the other day. In a previous life I was a sales rep in the area around the late 1980s & 1990s. I'm down the every few months to buy some hardware etc.

Brookvale is a light industrial area, never seen the place so dead. I think it was quieter than the Christmas break.

The 6.2% does not include,

Anyone working 1 hr a week
Being paid job keeper
Not working but not looking
Doing voluntary work (I think)

The real number is about double that. And expected to increase.

1 in 5 workers are under employed or not employed.

Simple maths!! 25 million Australians. 50% are kids or retired. That leaves 12.5 million workers. Less the 5% already unemployed. Say 12 million workers. Approx 20% are public servants who are not affected. So say 9.5 million 'other' workers. So if 800000 have lost their jobs that's approx 9% new unemployed to add to the original 5% unemployed. Now mix in Jobkeeper and Jobseeker and what have you got? A real mess that nobody can get their heads around. So when someone gives you an unemployment figure ask them how they came by those figures. Good luck getting an accurate figure.

Now I'm a self employed freelance photographer with no current work. So where do I fit into the mix?

Ah humbug !!
