Coaster engine replacement


I have a 97 bb40 coaster with the 3b engine. I live in bus full time and now I have a cracked exhaust manifold and need a new fuel pump. The engine is way under powered. I was wondering if this might be the time to replace the motor. Does anyone have suggestions for easiest and cheapest way to go? I dont have the skills to do it myself so I will have get it done. I am in Melbourne at the moment. Thanks Andrew

If you do a search you'll find discussions on this very subject, depending on your budget of course , you could try and find a 13-b or 15-b etc motor and get that fitted ... though finding one in good condition is the problem

You can get a later model tdi fitted , pre common rail , or get a grey import tdi from places like this enginecityimports.com.au/engines/toyota-diesel-2/

Otherwise a Ford Barra motor / commodore motor and running gear can be done too ..... lots of options and budgets to go with them

Yea the 3B is a bit underpowered for a Coaster, always was, and it has to be flatout all the time. As kesa has said you can search for alternatives but generally if you need to pay for the swap work then it will be expensive if it is complicated. Putting a different type of motor in there takes quite a bit of work so costs much more money. You could probably get a later model Toyota turbo motor that might slot in with little extra work and has 50- 70% more power and more efficient also. Same or similar mounts etc. 

That site kesa gave is one  https://enginecityimports.com.au/engines/toyota-diesel-2/ , this guy   http://www.mrcoaster.com.au/   might be worth talking to or even the big truck wreckers carry and fit motors for everything. But how much money do you want to spend.confuse The Toyota diesel motors below might be the best and easiest, but cost real money.

13BT COASTER or DYNA truck; A turbo charged version of the 13B, direct injection, 105mm stroke, 102mm bore, 3432cc.

14BT COASTER or DYNA truck; A turbo charged version of the 14B, direct injection, 112mm stroke, 102mm bore, 3661cc.

15BFT   DYNA truck;  16 valve engine, 4.1 L, turbo charged.


In the past people have fitted lots of petrol motors like the Holden and Ford sixes and V8s over the years but it depends on how many Ks you will do. The short term savings might go in the work required and the certification needed and the extra fuel used. Hmmm ?? I had a 3T Nissan truck with a Holden 6 in it. Better but thirsty and the diff ratio was much too low and needed changing also. More work and expense.hmm

Hi Andrew and Jaahn , just a quick edit to my post above , l forgot to add the " T " to the 2 motors l gave as examples ( as Jaahn has mentioned)
You wouldn't really bother installing a diesel without a turbo in your situation

some times it is a better option to repair the one you have. Weld up the exhaust and reco the fuel pump. I have an older coaster and its not power house but can happily cruise all day at 100kmh on flat roads, a bit slow on some of the hills but I have all day and if I dont get there Ijust pull over and go to bed

I would rebuild . Add turbo with 8lb so theres no need to rev to get power . The old 6 ., 4.2 go forever !

If he had a 4.2 six he might not be complaining ! He has a 3B which is 4 cyl 3432 cc and 90HP(97 ?) @ 3500 RPM.

Have a friend who fits LS Commodore engines to most Jap light trucksetc . he buys a complete SS Commodore and swaps engine and trans . Diff from Ford ute if required .  A turbo fitted to std engine in GOOD nick .  Is another option

. One good part about Jap vehicles is second hand later model parts are available!  I would look later model Or up spec Toyota engine .   Trouble is diesels dont die !! They just run

very slow !
