Thetford C402 water pump not working !!

Hi all;

       My caravan ( Jayco pop top 17.55.3 ) over the last 12 months and it was starting to look like the little water pump that helps with the flushing of the toilet was starting to give up the ghost. I could herer the pump working, but little to no water was coming out of the top of the bowl.

Time to investigate and removing the pump to my work bench and applying 12 volts to the impella was certainly spinning. Pulling the pump apart looked like a bit of a job, but really with both ends RF welded and trying to break the seals at both ends looked imposable. A new pump was somewhere around $100.00 and if i could save the pump , all the better.

In for a penny ,in for a pound and i grabbed one end of the pump with a pair of vice grips and squeezed. The end came off cleanly and the same with the other end of the pump. The motor spun freely, so that was not the problem and the same with the impeller, it was fine. So what was causing the pump not to work. Looking closely at the pump the discharge side of the pump runs up the inside of the pump housing. This was blocked with what looked like small pieces of plastic gravel that had jammed pump up. Removing the blockage and reinstalling the pump after super glueing both ends back together and now everything now works as it. The pump is now working 100% .

Who knows were the plastic gravel came from , maybe a left over from manufacture ?? all i know is the wife is happy with a 100% working toilet.

Hi Valiant81,

We have had same issues last year. Mother wasn't a happy lassie. Ours has an inline pump that stopped.We use Aqua Chem Pink in the flush tank and the Break down Chem in the cassette.

In  the off season the Pink Aqua settles in the bottom of the Flush Tank and dries / congeals around the pump shaft, Stopping the motor from spinning. Making folks thinking the motor has given up the ghost.

Getting your hand down the inside of the tank to reach the pump was an effort as ours bathroom is a combo unit.My back took a beating.

I Googled the problem. A pot of water fixed problem No1.(Mother)

It is recommended to drain the flushing tank and run some fresh water through the pump before parking up over summer.

I will test the pump before filling with the 200ml of Aqua Chem + water before every trip. Happy wife happy life.

You never stop learning.

I thought I had everything covered.

One has to be Jack of all trades, in this game of Thrones.

Last time I looked, an after market pump from Ebay was about $30, & when I got it looked exactly the same as the expensive original.

Hi all;

      I have been using nappy san in the holding tank for years ( well as long as we have had this caravan ) and for the flush tank, a couple of drops of eucalyptus oil and a squirt of dish washing liquid. Never a problem and that is what i thought of when i first started to have problem with the pump.

 It was only when i dismantled the pump i was able to see the blockage, and yes it dis look like small little pieces of plastic and around the size of a grain of rice. The "rice" was very hard and took a while to dislodge it. Even to cut the plastic pieces was interesting and ended up using a small pair of side cutters to do the job.
