Prepared home meals for the road


I am really appreciating my cheapie vacuum sealer! When cooking at home, I just vacuum pack the leftovers and freeze until ready for a trip. There is no 'freezer burn' and generally I just have to soak the pack in hot water until the desired temperature, slice open the bag and slide onto a plate. The meal is just as fresh as it was when first cooked.

It saves a lot of time, money and (otherwise delicious) waste and makes easy meals on the go - without having to wash up the cooking gear!

I also have a small, less effective battery powered system which is handy off grid. Same deal when cooking on the road; just vacuum pack leftovers, freeze or refrigerate and save for another time.

Vacuum packing is cheap and ideal for sauces, stews, lasagne, sausage rolls, steamed rice or fresh meats, etc. A bonus on extended trips or remote areas.

Another handy gadget is my dehydrator. Some fresh vegies don't like freezers!

Next trick will be experimenting with smoking food - then getting Barb to eat it!

The Child-Bride often uses zip-lok bags (squeeze out the air) to store Bolognese, Curries, fresh fish, mince and the like - by placing them in the freezer flat packages are easier to fit in limited space of caravan fridge freezer.

I have had two vacuum sealers. Both broke. My latest fad is zip lock bags. I use them for everything. Like possum said great for the freezer I can fit 2 weeks meals for me & dog in the small ice box in the 90ltr fridge. I doubt this would make those against plastics happy though. So I compromised, and only use them for the freezer and use multi use containers for the fridge area.

Another trick is when vac packing soups, stews, sauces or other wet stuff. Just freeze it first in take away containers, then empty it into the vac bag and seal. Saves a lot of mess.
