Ive made myself a copy of a Rock Tamer, obviously not as pretty as the real deal, and have it fitted to my 200 series Landcruiser. Ive cut a hole opposite my downwards facing exhaust pipe and have the mudflap angled at approx 30 degrees. When pulling our 22.5ft van the exhaust soot is blowing back onto the rear bumper leaving black soot residue. Has anyone else experienced this and how can it be fixed?
Try BP fuel, a bit more expensive but exhaust soot is min, I experienced a bit more power, and a smoother running motor.
The main advantage I average 100km further per tank.

Check your air cleaner ? Soot is sign of running too rich . Mind you exhaust should be way from
body parts . Yes best to fit a 45* turn down ? To avoid soot, exhaust on body parts .
What year model Bruce ? with dpf or prior ? Early update models with dpf have had a lot of injectors replaced by Toyota. From late 2016 I think until now it is very rare issue. Is this the first towing trip for a while, if so it could well clean it self up.

Heard another Caravan Miracle today. Guy has 9kg and 4.5kg gas bottles. Gas fridge, gas heating, gas cooking, gas hot water only free camps. Only refills the two gas bottles when he gets home after 4.5 months travelling. Never runs out of gas while away.
I would love to buy some of your miracle 100km further per tank fuel and gas bottles that do not run out.

Do I detect a hint of sarcasm in your comments? BP has,I believe,the highest cetane rating of any diesel available at servos,giving better fuel economy and better performance? I use nothing else.Cheers.

Bruce, I too made an el-cheapo version of a rock tamer for my last Patrol. I had a 90 degree bend added to the end of the pipe to save issues with going through the rubber. As I had gas injection, soot was reduced.
I trust you have only added enough rubber to cover the spray from the wheels.

We have a 2014 model. We have returned from a 10 month round Aus Trip so the engine has worked over a 20 thou plus route. The Rock Tamer copy is a new add on.
Now heres the thing. I made it wide enough to cover the full rear end, obviously made up of two seperate pieces. There is the hole for the exhaust and a small gap between the two.

About 4 years ago I decided to put the various diesal brands to the a non scientific trail across the major brands, including premium v truck diesal, I used each brand for a month, in both towing and not towing.

No one brand was better than the other, there was a miniscule improvement when using premium diesal, but when you factored in the additional cost per litre the net gain became a loss.
Test Vehicle 2010 Ford Ranger PK 3.0l TDI Manual, towing a 25ft Jayco weighing 2.6t, and a GCM 5.35t
Now I fuel up at the most convienent servo, without going out of my way, the last couple of months I have been using Mobil Truck Diesal at 104.9 cpl getting 9.4l/100k not towing.
Bruce, the reason I asked about the width came from advice from a copper who was at Birdsville.
Diffs can overheat with insufficient air passing over them.
Fact or fantasy, I don't know - he would have seen lots of breakdowns in his three year stint.

Rather than cutting out centre of rubber blade drill out centre section (like swiss cheese) with 19mm -25mm holes the sieve will impede most rocks but allow air to pass through.

I did a bit of a mod and changed the angle of the mudflap to 45 degrees, so now when we are travelling the soot residue is reduced, but still there. When I return home in a few weeks Ill do the swiss cheese mod as suggested and then I guess all I can do is live with it and clean the soot at each stop.
