RE: Breakaway Battery

ie Do the Inspection requirements fully cover all and every requirement of breakaway brake systems or only an easily inspected subset of the requirements

He explained that the Requirements covered everything that was required, they do not state everything that is not required, impossible.

He pointed me to " Road transport Vehicle Registration regulation 2017" Schedule 2, Clause 126 is where it starts....

I have not read it as he told me that the Battery monitor was no longer required. Good enough for me.

cheers.

Good, now we are getting close to the answer.

NSW Regulation : Road transport Vehicle Registration regulation 2017" Schedule 2, Clause 126 and 127 state:

126 What brakes a trailer must have
(cf ALVSR 2015 r 126; 2007 reg Sch 2 cl 140)

(1) A trailer with a GTM over 750 kilograms must have brakes that operate on at least 1 wheel at each end of 1 or more axles of the trailer.
(2) A semi-trailer or converter dolly with a GTM over 2 tonnes must have brakes that operate on all its wheels.

127 Operation of brakes on trailers
(cf ALVSR 2015 r 127; 2007 reg Sch 2 cl 141)

(1) The braking system of a trailer with a GTM over 2 tonnes must allow the driver of a motor vehicle towing the trailer to operate the brakes from a normal driving position.
(2) The brakes on a trailer with a GTM over 2 tonnes must--
(a) operate automatically and quickly if the trailer breaks away from the towing vehicle, and
(b) remain in operation for at least 15 minutes after a break-away, and
(c) be able to hold the trailer on a 12% gradient while in operation after a break-away.

No mention of a remote monitor, nor any mention of how the breakaway system must be powered or charged although I haven't read the full document nor the references to prior regulations.

Thanks for the info.

Hi On the subject of breakaways, from memory you can not hook the cable to your tow bar, is this correct? if so where do most people hook the breakaway cable ? Ian

My towbar has a small plate with a hole protruding specifically intended for the BAC.

Hi Mike. My tow bar also has one of those fittings. When I was having the WDH (oh dear) fitted the bloke told me that I could not use that because if the hitch or tow bar came off the car the breakaway would be useless. All that left was the number plate as an anchor point. I nodded wisely and when he left hooked it up to the tow bar.
